JCB Planetary Gears and Final Drive: Hub Noise, Metal in Oil, and Loss of Drive
A new whine from the hub area, metallic paste on the axle drain plug, or one hub running hotter than the other are early warnings. Don’t push it to “next service”. These faults move fast when oil film breaks down or contamination builds up.
What these symptoms usually point to:
Whine rising with road speed: gear mesh wear, bearing wear, or low oil film
Clicking/clunking on turns: backlash issues, pitted/chipped teeth, differential wear
One hub running hot: low oil on one side, bearing drag, internal friction
Metal on the plug: normal fine paste vs gritty particles vs fragments (tooth failure risk)
Before you strip anything:
Check oil level + condition in hubs and diff
Inspect magnetic plugs
Compare hub temps after a short travel run
Note when noise changes (accel, decel, turns)
