🧬 Fun Fact Friday 🔬 (Biology)
Every Second, Millions of Cells Divide in Your Body

Your body is constantly renewing itself. Every second, millions of cells divide through a process called mitosis, replacing worn-out cells and repairing damaged tissues.

This continuous cycle of growth and renewal allows your body to heal wounds, maintain organs, and support life every day.

Understanding cell division remains one of the foundations of cancer research, regenerative medicine, and biotechnology.

At AFMS, we're proud to support the laboratories where these life-changing discoveries take place.

💨 Air Handling Units
The Engine Behind a Controlled Environment

In a critical laboratory or cleanroom, air isn't simply something that moves through the building. It is part of the containment and environmental control strategy.

Air Handling Units (AHUs) play a critical role in managing the air supplied to controlled environments, working alongside filtration and other HVAC components to help maintain the required conditions.

AFMS provides solutions encompassing air handling units, HVAC systems, filtration equipment, high-containment housings, fan filter units and associated clean-air technologies.

The goal isn't simply to move air.

It's to engineer an integrated system that supports the safety, cleanliness, pressure control and performance required by the facility.

Because in a controlled environment, airflow is part of the infrastructure.

🏗️ Brick & Mortar BSL Laboratories
Building Biocontainment From the Ground Up

A high-containment laboratory isn't simply a room with specialised equipment. Every element, from the building envelope and workflow to HVAC, filtration and containment systems, has to work together.

AFMS designs, constructs and commissions BSL-2 and BSL-3 brick-and-mortar laboratories, working with clients to create facilities around their specific research and operational requirements.

Our approach considers:
✔ Containment and biosafety requirements✔ Air filtration and HVAC systems✔ Laboratory workflow✔ Specialised equipment and instrumentation✔ Future scalability and adaptability✔ Quality and long-term reliability
The result is a facility designed not only for today's requirements, but with the flexibility to support tomorrow's work.

Good biocontainment starts with good design.

Monday Motivation | Trust the Work

“If you know you are on the right track, if you have this inner knowledge, then nobody can turn you off… no matter what they say.”— Barbara McClintock, Nobel Prize-winning geneticist

Barbara McClintock spent years pursuing ideas that many others were reluctant to accept. Her persistence eventually transformed our understanding of genetics.
Her story is a powerful reminder that meaningful work doesn't always receive immediate recognition. Sometimes you have to keep going while the results are still taking shape.

This Monday, remember that progress isn't always visible straight away.
Keep learning. Keep improving. Keep doing the work.

The breakthrough may be closer than you think.

🌿 Fun Fact Friday 🔬 (Biology)
Trees Can "Remember" Droughts

Trees don't have brains, but they can retain biochemical "memories" of environmental stress.

After surviving periods of drought, many species alter how they regulate water use, making them better prepared for future dry conditions.

Scientists study these adaptive mechanisms to improve agriculture, forestry, and climate resilience.

Every breakthrough begins with careful observation—and the right laboratory environment.

🧬 Modular BSL Laboratories
When Your Laboratory Needs to Go Where the Science Is

Not every research project happens in a conventional building.

AFMS designs and builds modular Biosafety Level laboratories that provide a flexible alternative for research, testing and analysis where a purpose-built facility is required.

Our modular BSL solutions are designed around the specific needs of the end user, with consideration given to workflow, air filtration, specialised equipment, applicable biosafety requirements and future adaptability.

From initial design and construction through to commissioning, maintenance and technical support, AFMS provides a complete solution designed to help laboratories operate safely and effectively.

A laboratory doesn't always have to be permanent to be purposeful.
Purpose-built. Flexible. Ready for the work that matters.

Monday Motivation | Be Willing to Change Your Mind

“Science progresses best when observations force us to alter our preconceptions.”— Vera Rubin, astronomer

One of the most powerful forms of growth is being willing to discover that you were wrong.

Vera Rubin's work transformed our understanding of galaxies and helped provide compelling evidence for dark matter. Her words remind us that progress comes from paying attention to the evidence—even when it challenges what we thought we already knew.

The same principle applies beyond science. Listen. Observe. Question. Adapt.

As we begin a new week, don't be afraid to reconsider an assumption, approach a problem from a different angle or change course when the evidence points somewhere new.

Progress begins when we're willing to learn.

🧬 Fun Fact Friday 🔬 (Biology)
Octopuses Can Edit Their Own RNA

Unlike most animals, octopuses can rapidly edit their RNA after it has been produced, allowing them to adapt how proteins function without changing their DNA.

This ability helps them survive changing ocean temperatures and may contribute to their extraordinary intelligence and adaptability.

Researchers are studying RNA editing to better understand evolution, neurological disorders, and future gene therapies.

AFMS supports the laboratories where tomorrow's biological discoveries begin.

🔬 Validation of Laminar Flow Benches: Clean Air You Can Trust

In laboratories, pharmaceutical facilities, and other controlled environments, maintaining a sterile, particle-free workspace is critical. Laminar flow clean benches are designed to provide a controlled airflow environment that helps protect sensitive products, materials, and processes from contamination.

But how do you know your laminar flow bench is performing as it should?
Validation and certification provide the evidence.

AFMS offers validation and certification of laminar flow clean benches in accordance with ISO 14644-1 and applicable manufacturer requirements. Our testing evaluates the key performance characteristics of the unit, helping confirm that it continues to provide the required level of cleanliness and protection.

Our validation process can include:
✔ Airflow Velocity & Uniformity
Measuring airflow velocity and verifying that airflow is evenly distributed across the work surface using calibrated airflow measurement equipment and visualization tools.
✔ HEPA Filter Integrity
Testing HEPA filters for leaks or breaches using aerosol generators and calibrated photometers to confirm filter performance.
✔ Airborne Particle Counting
Measuring airborne particle concentrations within the clean bench to verify that the required cleanliness level is being maintained.
✔ Noise & Vibration Testing
Assessing noise and vibration levels to ensure they remain within acceptable limits for the laboratory environment.
✔ Visual & General Inspections
Checking lighting, seals, airflow indicators, control panels, connections, wear and tear, and other components that could affect performance.

Regular validation doesn't just demonstrate compliance—it provides documented confidence that your clean bench is functioning as intended and providing the controlled environment your work requires.

Clean air is engineered. Performance should be verified.

🛡️ Bag-In Bag-Out Systems: Safer Filter Changes for Critical Environments

In high-containment and sensitive environments, filter replacement is not simply a maintenance task—it is an important part of protecting people and maintaining containment.

AFMS supplies and installs Bag-In Bag-Out (BIBO) filtration systems designed for applications where contaminated filters need to be removed and replaced while minimising the risk of exposure to hazardous contaminants.

BIBO systems are commonly used in biosafety laboratories, hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities, biotechnology environments, chemical industries, animal facilities, and other critical applications where containment and operator safety are essential.

Depending on the application, AFMS solutions can incorporate features such as secure filter clamping, safe-change technology, decontamination provisions and filter testing capabilities. These systems help ensure that filtration remains effective while supporting safe maintenance procedures.

AFMS works with Camfil BIBO filtration systems, providing design, installation, maintenance, filter replacement and performance support across Africa.
When your filtration system is protecting people, products and the environment, safe filter change is part of the overall containment strategy.
