The Lab Is the System — Not Just the Room

A laboratory is more than benches, instruments and equipment. Its performance depends on how multiple systems work together.

Air handling, filtration, room pressure, equipment placement, personnel movement and the physical layout all influence how a laboratory operates. When these elements are designed in isolation, the result may be a facility that looks right but does not fully support its intended workflow.

Fun Fact Friday | Sterility Doesn't Always Mean Endotoxin-Free

Did you know that a solution can contain no viable bacteria and still trigger a significant biological response?

Endotoxins, particularly lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, can remain biologically active even after bacterial cells have been killed. Standard sterilisation methods that eliminate viable microorganisms do not necessarily remove or inactivate endotoxins.

This distinction is critical in pharmaceutical manufacturing, injectable medicines, medical device production and laboratory testing, where endotoxin contamination can trigger potentially dangerous inflammatory responses.

The scientific takeaway: Microbial viability and endotoxin contamination are two different parameters—and each requires appropriate testing and control.

Reliable laboratory practice depends on understanding precisely what a test measures, and what it does not.

AFMS was proud to be a sponsor and exhibitor at the recent South African Association of Veterinary Technologists (SAAVT) Congress at the Krystal Beach Hotel in Gordon’s Bay.

🦠 Some Bacteria Can Survive Without Oxygen

We often associate life with oxygen, but oxygen isn't essential for every organism.

Some microorganisms are anaerobic, meaning they can live and grow without oxygen.

In fact, for certain anaerobic organisms, oxygen can actually be harmful.
These microorganisms use alternative chemical processes to obtain energy. Depending on the species and environment, they may use substances such as sulphate, nitrate or carbon dioxide in their metabolism.

Anaerobic microorganisms can be found in environments ranging from deep sediments and wetlands to the digestive systems of animals.

They also play important roles in wastewater treatment, decomposition and biogeochemical cycles.

This is a great reminder that "habitable" doesn't necessarily mean "full of oxygen."
