Let’s be honest... carpets on boats had a good run, but that time is long gone.

They stink, they hold water, they collect sand like it’s their job, and if you’ve ever left your boat covered after a wet weekend, you know exactly what that smell is.

Luckily, we’ve had EVA marine flooring around for a while now and honestly, it’s one of the best things to ever happen to boating.

It’s clean.
It’s modern.
It makes any boat look like it just rolled out the showroom.
And it actually works.

𝗦𝗼, 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗜𝘁 𝗦𝗼 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱?
EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) is a closed-cell foam that means it doesn’t soak up water, it doesn’t stink, and it won’t peel off after a few hot days on the Vaal.

It’s soft underfoot, grips like crazy even when it’s wet, and it keeps cool in the sun, no more dancing around like a hot potato when you jump onboard barefoot.

It’s also quiet, shock-absorbing, and just feels solid. The kind of difference you only notice when you step on another boat and wonder how you ever lived without it.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝘃𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄
Old-school teak? Beautiful, but a nightmare to maintain.
Synthetic teak? Great stuff, but pricey.
EVA? It hits the sweet spot... easy to install, affordable, modern, and low maintenance.

𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲
Here in SA, we’ve got a few guys doing EVA flooring now, but let’s be real, not everyone gets it right.
We’ve seen jobs lift, bubble, or fade because they used the wrong glue or rushed the fitment.

Alright okes...

We've spoken about some proper legends during Boat Week.

Gemini.

Odyssey.

Brands with decades of history.

Some of these okes have been building boats longer than half of Facebook has been alive.

Then today...

We're talking about a boat brand that's basically the new laaitie at school.

Navis Marine.

They don't have fifty years behind them.

Hell...

They've barely got five.

And yet...

They're somehow sitting in the same conversations as brands that have been around forever.

Now before anyone starts sharpening their keyboards...

Hear me out.

Because I chatted to the guys from Navis, and one thing stood out immediately.

You can actually tell when someone gives a damn about their brand.

The moment Boat Week started...

Some companies disappeared.

Nothing.

Not even a message.

Others?

They absolutely flooded my inbox.

Photos.

Stories.

Old pictures.

Random facts.

The whole lot.

Not because I asked...

Because they genuinely wanted people to know who they are.

And honestly...

I love that.

It tells me they're proud of what they're building.

𝗜𝗧 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗘𝗗... 𝗔𝗙𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗔 𝗙𝗘𝗪 𝗞𝗟𝗜𝗣𝗣𝗜𝗘𝗦 & 𝗖𝗢𝗞𝗘𝗦

Now this is probably the most South African boat story I've heard all week.

Forget boardrooms.

Forget million-rand business plans.

Forget consultants wearing skinny jeans telling everyone about "market disruption."

Apparently two Navis salesmen were on a trip to Pilanesberg.

A few Klippies & Cokes later...

The conversation went something like...

"You know what South Africa actually needs?"

"The cheapest brand-new boat on the market."

Now if you've ever had a few brandies around a braai...

You'll know exactly how this normally ends.

You wake up the next morning with absolutely no idea what your million-rand business idea was.

Somewhere between brandy number six and number seven you apparently solved Eskom...

Invented teleportation...

And figured out how to stop potholes.

Then you wake up...

And all you've got left is a hangover.

Somehow...

These okes actually remembered theirs.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗔 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗣𝗜𝗗𝗟𝗬 𝗦𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘

They didn't try reinvent boating.

They didn't promise flying boats.

They didn't promise AI-controlled anchors.

They asked one question.

How do we get more South Africans onto the water?

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗫 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗗 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚

So they went hunting for a hull that wasn't being produced anymore.

Cleaned it up.

Modernised it.

Bolted on a four-stroke.

Added some seriously lekker graphics.

And suddenly...

The Navis Apex was born.

A brand-new boat...

Motor...

And trailer...

For R379,000.

At a time when decent second-hand boats were already knocking on that door.

That's why it worked.

Not because it was revolutionary.

Because it actually made sense.

Now here's the clever part...

They didn't stop there.

They looked at the response and basically said...

"Right... what else can we do?"

So they took the exact same idea...

And built a centre console.

Again...

Brand-new.

Motor.

Trailer.

Around the R400,000 mark.

Then literally last week...

They launched their brand-new bass boat.

Again following the exact same philosophy.

A complete package...

Sitting around the R370,000 mark.

That's when you realise this wasn't just one lucky idea after a few Klippies & Cokes.

It actually became the business plan.

𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗦 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗞 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗛 𝗔𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗔

Now here's another thing that made me laugh.

The name "Apex"?

Apparently it came from Apex Legends.

Yes...

The PlayStation game.

If you don't know what Apex Legends is...

Go ask your laaitie.

Or the 35-year-old oke that still says he's "just playing one more game" at midnight.

And Navis?

That's simply Latin for...

Boat.

Seriously.

Imagine sitting around trying to name your company.

"What should we call it?"

"I don't know..."

"Boat?"

"But make it Latin."

Done.

𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗗𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗧𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗠𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗩𝗘𝗦... 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧'𝗦 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗔 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚

Now here's something a lot of people don't know.

Navis isn't trying to pretend they've been hand-laying fibreglass since the dinosaurs.

Instead...

They partnered with some of the best boat builders in South Africa.

Guys with decades and decades of experience.

The kind of builders that have produced boats you've probably seen your whole life without even realising it.

And honestly...

I think that's clever.

Because there's no point trying to reinvent something people already do exceptionally well.

Let the experts build.

Focus on building the brand.

𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬'𝗥𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗧𝗥𝗬𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗕𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗦𝗧... 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬'𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗥𝗬𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗚𝗘𝗧 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚

This is probably what I like most.

Now before someone jumps into the comments...

Yes...

Navis builds some seriously premium boats too.

Big pontoons.

Larger family boats.

Proper high-end rigs that push well into the million-rand bracket.

They're not just an "entry-level" brand.

But what impressed me...

Is that instead of only chasing the expensive market...

They've also gone after the oke who's standing at We Buy Boats... sorry... Facebook Marketplace... trying to decide between a 20-year-old second-hand boat with questionable wiring...

Or something brand new.

That's a market South Africa desperately needed.

Because every new boater helps everyone.

Someone buys their first boat.

Now they need lifejackets.

A fish finder.

A service.

Fuel.

A prop.

A trailer bearing.

They travel to another dam.

Buy lunch there.

Book accommodation.

Spend money at another boat shop.

One boat sale doesn't just help one company.

It keeps the whole boating industry moving.

And honestly...

I reckon that's a pretty cool way to think about growing the industry.

𝗦𝗢... 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗗𝗢 𝗜 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗞𝗢𝗡

I reckon Navis is proof that you don't need fifty years behind you to make people take notice.

Sometimes all you need...

Is a good idea...

A couple of stubborn okes...

Apparently a few Klippies & Cokes...

And enough guts to actually follow through the next morning.

Because let's be honest...

Most of us have had million-rand ideas after a bottle of brandy.

These okes are one of the few that actually built theirs.

And honestly...

That's pretty cool...
