Ever wonder why two fans that look identical on paper perform totally differently in real life?

It usually comes down to ONE overlooked part: the bearing.

There are 3 main types, and each one changes how your fan performs:

🔹 Sleeve Bearing
Budget-friendly and quiet... but doesn't love being mounted vertically, and wears out faster with continuous use.

🔹 Ball Bearing
Built for tough conditions - handles heat, speed, and any mounting angle. Just a bit noisier.

🔹 Hydraulic Bearing
The best of both worlds. Nearly as quiet as sleeve, with a lifespan that gets close to ball. (Just give it a few minutes to "warm up" after power-on!)

Picking the wrong one is one of the most common - and most avoidable - reasons a fan fails way before it should.

So how do you choose?

It comes down to 3 questions:
✅ How will it be mounted?
✅ Is it running non-stop or on/off?
✅ How much does noise matter?

Same 25 x 25 x 7mm frame. Four completely different fans, depending on what you actually need.

At 7,000 RPM: 1.22 CFM, 19.6 dB-A. Quiet, low output.

At 10,000 RPM: 1.55 CFM, 23.5 dB-A.

At 14,000 RPM: 1.90 CFM, 26.4 dB-A.

At 17,000 RPM: 2.81 CFM, 31.2 dB-A. More than double the airflow of the lowest tier - and noticeably louder.

More RPM means more air, but it also means more noise.

There's no single "right" answer here - it depends on whether the application cares more about airflow or acoustics.

Same footprint either way, so swapping between tiers doesn't mean redesigning anything else.

24V pulls 0.13A.

48V pulls 0.065A.

All three land on identical numbers:

4,000 RPM

40.1 CFM

4.41mmH2O

Nothing about the airflow changes. What changes is how much current your system has to supply to get there.

If you're working with tight power budgets, thin gauge wiring, or long cable runs - this is the kind of detail that decides whether 12V is fine, or whether you're better off stepping up to 24V or 48V.

Same fan on paper. Different fan for your design, depending on the voltage rail you're working with.

This micro DC brushless fan runs on 3.3V or 5V, moving up to 0.12 CFM at up to 2.00mmH2O.

Numbers that small don't sound impressive until you realize what they're being asked to fit into - wearables, micro electronics, anything where space isn't measured in inches, it's measured in millimeters.

When there's barely room for the fan itself, every spec has to earn its place.

On one end, a fan smaller than a coin, spinning up to 20,000 RPM. On the other, a 200x200x60mm unit moving up to 645.61 CFM.

Same category. Completely different jobs.

The small one goes where space is the whole constraint - tight electronics, compact devices, anywhere a standard fan just won't fit. The large one goes where volume is the point - equipment, enclosures, anything that needs serious air moved fast.

Most people only think about fans at one end of that range.

A cooling fan... inside a headlight?

Yes, really. Modern headlights aren't just bulbs anymore - many pack in LEDs, drivers, and control electronics for things like adaptive lighting, all generating heat in a very small, sealed space.

The fix: a 20 x 20 x 6mm DC brushless fan, small enough to disappear into the housing, running 8,000-12,000 RPM at 5V or 12V.

It's a good reminder that "cooling application" doesn't always mean a big industrial cabinet or a server rack. Sometimes it's a component the size of a coin, doing its job where you'd never think to look.
