Congratulations to Alstom on winning the Supplier Excellence Award at the 2026 Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Industry Awards. BarChip was proud to be named a finalist in the same category for the Port Chalmers Rail Sidings Project in New Zealand.

The project replaced conventional steel reinforcement with BarChip macro synthetic fibre, delivering a simpler reinforcement solution with significant reductions in steel use and embodied carbon - https://barchip.short.gy/XaM1cr.

Great to have Todd Clarke and Dr. Christophe Camille there on the night, both of whom worked closely with the project team on the fibre reinforcement solution at Port Chalmers.

Yes, BarChip Macro Synthetic Fibre Reinforces Precast Concrete Tunnel Segments!

BarChip fibre can meet the handling, installation and long-term load requirements of many modern tunnel designs, providing high performance reinforcement without relying on a conventional steel cage.

Full-scale testing shows that BarChip reinforced segments can redistribute stress after cracking and maintain a relatively flat post-crack load response, continuing to carry load as cracking develops. And that performance is hard at work.

Blacksnake Creek CSO: 100% BarChip reinforced.
Santoña-Laredo: 83% reduction in steel, 50% faster manufacturing, ~75% reduction in reinforcement carbon.
Harefield to Southall: 100% BarChip reinforced.

Reinforced with BarChip: Downtown Bellevue Tunnel

The Downtown Bellevue Tunnel in Washington, USA, forms part of Sound Transit’s East Link light rail extension, connecting Seattle with Bellevue and Redmond.

Constructed beneath the heart of downtown Bellevue, the 610 m tunnel used fibre reinforced shotcrete for ground support, with BarChip macro synthetic fibre providing post-crack performance without the need for conventional steel fibre reinforcement.

The use of BarChip provided a corrosion free reinforcement solution while simplifying handling and application during shotcrete operations.

2,500 heavy trucks a day. 189 million ESALs. 10 years of service.

Camino La Pólvora is a critical freight route connecting Chile’s highway network with the Port of Valparaíso, with heavy trucks accounting for around 80% of daily traffic.

Rehabilitated in 2016, La Pólvora combined Thin Concrete Pavement (TCP) design with BarChip macro synthetic fibre, reducing pavement thickness from more than 300 mm to just 230 mm. The 23% reduction in concrete consumption significantly reduced embodied carbon and cost.

Ten years later, La Pólvora continues to carry thousands of heavy trucks every day with no reported issues.

Less concrete. Lower Cost. Proven heavy duty performance.

Some fibres earn their reputation in a lab. BarChip fibres earned theirs a kilometre underground.

For decades, BarChip macro synthetic fibres have been used for ground support in some of the world's most demanding mining environments.
With high toughness and post-crack performance, BarChip fibre is proven across mining operations on almost every continent and is a reinforcement solution trusted by many of the world's major mining companies.

But performance underground is only part of the story.

Replacing conventional steel reinforcement with corrosion free synthetic fibre can improve safety and construction efficiency while significantly reducing the embodied carbon associated with traditional reinforcement.

High toughness. Corrosion free. Lower carbon. Proven underground. See why BarChip is trusted for mining ground support worldwide - https://barchip.short.gy/H3BMQp.

4,815 tonnes of CO₂e saved with one design decision.

Replacing conventional steel reinforcement with BarChip macro synthetic fibre on the Parramatta Light Rail delivered measurable environmental and construction benefits:

• 4,815 tonnes CO₂e reduction
• 2,426 tonnes of steel reinforcement eliminated
• 15% reduction in labour costs
• Highest ever 'As-Built' Infrastructure Sustainability rating

A great example of how reinforcement design can improve construction efficiency, simplify onsite processes and deliver meaningful sustainability outcomes.

From Sydney to New York, Budapest and London, fibre reinforced concrete track slab is helping reshape modern rail infrastructure.

Across Asia, Australia, Europe and North America, BarChip has been specified for metro and light rail projects where construction efficiency, durability and sustainability are critical.

By replacing traditional steel reinforcement with BarChip macro synthetic fibres, track slab construction can be simplified, difficult reinforcement processes eliminated and construction time reduced. It can also significantly lower the embodied carbon of reinforcement while delivering reliable crack control and long-term performance.

With successful applications across multiple continents, fibre reinforced ballastless track is no longer an emerging technology, it's a proven reinforcement solution for modern track slab construction.

45% thinner precast concrete elements. Same structural performance.

One of the greatest opportunities in precast concrete isn't simply replacing steel reinforcement, it's optimising the entire element. For the Debrecen Stadium project in Hungary, advanced finite element analysis and macro synthetic fibres enabled the thickness of the precast seating elements to be reduced from 220 mm to 120 mm while maintaining the required structural performance. The result?

✔ 45% thinner precast elements
✔ Lower concrete consumption
✔ Reduced material and transport requirements
✔ Faster, more efficient manufacturing

This project demonstrates how fibre reinforced precast concrete can deliver benefits that extend well beyond reinforcement replacement. By combining performance baed engineering with BarChip macro synthetic fibres, manufacturers can optimise designs to improve efficiency, durability, sustainability and cost.

Discover how BarChip is helping precast manufacturers optimise projects across a wide range of applications, including civil structure, water infrastructure, burial vaults, tanks, pipes seating and more.

Corrosion doesn't start at the surface. It starts inside the concrete.

When steel reinforcement is exposed to chlorides and moisture, corrosion doesn't happen overnight. But once it begins, the consequences can be significant. As steel corrodes, it expands, creating internal pressure that leads to cracking, spalling and increased maintenance throughout the life of the structure.

BarChip macro synthetic fibres offer a different approach.

Because BarChip macro synthetic fibres are non-corrosive, they eliminate corrosion induced deterioration while continuing to provide effective crack control and long-term structural performance.
