A proximity sensor is a device that can detect or sense the approach or presence of nearby objects and for this it does not need physical contact. The two most commonly used proximity sensors are the inductive proximity sensor and the capacitive proximity sensor. An inductive proximity sensor can only detect metal targets whereas Capacitive proximity sensors can be used to detect and count non-metallic objects such as glass, paper, cardboard, plastic or wood.
