So Why Do We Support The RRGCC (Red River Gorge Climbing Coalition)?
In support of this weekend’s annual RIAD 2024 event:
As someone who first laid hands on the rugged and awe-inspiring cliffs of the Red River Gorge three decades ago, I've had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of this climbing paradise. Today, I'm not here to reminisce about the "good old days" or to boast about the challenges we faced back then. Instead, I want to draw your attention to the remarkable work of the Red River Gorge Climbers' Coalition (RRGCC) and express my profound gratitude for their often unnoticed yet invaluable efforts.
Before the Coalition, and even at their inception, there were conflicts between the locals, the authorities, and climbers. We were affectionately known as “dirtbags,” and I'm glad some things never change. There were few rules, some of which were broken or simply ignored. The future of climbing was uncertain for those of us who cherished the unique sandstone cliffs that we all know today. Climbers were not always well received, and there was an 'us against them' mentality that seemed to prevail. The establishment of the RRGCC marked a turning point, fostering dialogue and understanding among climbers, locals, and authorities. Their relentless advocacy and community-building efforts have been pivotal in transforming these tensions into cooperation and mutual respect.
Founded in 1996, the RRGCC has been instrumental in ensuring open public access to the Gorge's climbing areas, managing over 1,100 acres of prime climbing land. Their efforts, including the acquisition of the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve (PMRP) and subsequent lands, have not only preserved countless climbing routes but also set a benchmark for climber-led conservation.
Beyond land acquisition, the RRGCC champions responsible climbing and environmental stewardship. Initiatives like the Developer MOU and Route Submission form guide sustainable route development, while collaborations with the Access Fund ensure the long-term preservation of these areas. Their work also significantly benefits the local economy, with climbers contributing $3.6 million annually.
The transformation I've witnessed in the Red River Gorge is a testament to the RRGCC's unwavering dedication. They are the guardians of our climbing heritage and the architects of a sustainable future for the sport. Supporting the RRGCC means contributing to the preservation of this magnificent climbing haven and ensuring it remains accessible for future generations.
Let's pause for a moment to acknowledge the RRGCC's efforts and reflect on how we can support their mission. Whether through volunteering, donating, or adhering to responsible climbing practices, every action matters. Thank you, RRGCC, for everything you do. Your dedication enhances our climbing experiences and safeguards the natural beauty of the Red River Gorge. Let's all play our part in supporting this incredible organization.
