We have 2 spots that have become available at our upcoming "Introduction to sheet metal restoration" course on the 22nd and 23rd of October!!! The course will be held at our workshop located in Thomastown, Victoria, and costs $495 for both days.

2 of our students have rescheduled their course dates, and given the late notice of the reschedulings we do not have time to go through the course waiting list, so we are opening up these spots to anyone who wants them.

If you would like to join us and learn what it takes to shape metal and restore your car, please message us directly or comment on this post.

You will have access to mig and spot welders, English wheel, bead rollers, pan brakes, sandbags, planishing hammer, and other tools. Bbq lunch, and morning and afternoon tea will be included.
All topics covered will have a focus on using a small range of tools so you don't have to spend a million dollars kitting out your garage.
Day one topics covered will be as follows...
Shrinking
Stretching
Cutting
Folding
Edge turning
De-skinning and re-skinning doors / bootlids / tailgates
Pattern and template making
Panel analysis
How to make a patch panel
Spot welding
Unpicking spotwelds
MIG plug welding
MIG butt welding
Dressing and planishing welds
English wheel basics
Dent removal

Day 2 will be for putting your new skills to use on your own panels. Bring in one panel you'd like to work on and we can make some headway on turning that rusty dented mess into a less rusty and less dented mess! 😆

Well, that's a wrap on the first intro to sheet metal restoration class. All of the participants came in with little to no shaping experience and all did an excellent job of learning the basics on the first day. We practiced tipping edges, shrinking and stretching, as well as using a shrinking stump and English wheel to form a compound curve.

The second day saw the guys making everything from a lower door skin on an HQ ute, fixing up a dented Valiant door, to hand fabricating an RX7 lower quarter section, and some intensive TIG practice, we had a little bit of everything at the shop over the weekend.

Thanks for attending guys, I hope you enjoy your new skills.

This is not the first time it's had work done, but the previous repairs were not quite up to scratch. Patch panels were made but no shape put into them (as you can see in the pic with the template), we've started roughing out the replacement sections with the correct shape and profiles.

There'll be plenty more updates on this one as we work through the long job list.

In response to a number of requests, I have developed a 2 day course to help you restore your cars yourself.

So, the introduction to sheet metal restoration course will be held at my workshop in Thomastown, Victoria on the 17th and 18th of September, from 9am to 5pm both days. The cost of the course will be $495 inc gst for both days and includes cnc plasma cut blanks for metal shaping practice as well as steel for making patch panels, and consumables like sanding and cutting discs etc. for the practice panels.

This first class is limited to 6 students, and 2 spots are already taken. If you would like to secure a spot please comment below or send me a message. You will need to bring your own PPE, goggles, gloves, ear muffs, welding helmet, and welding gloves. I highly recommend bringing a selection of your own hammers, dollies, angle grinders and other basic tools.

Thanks,
Mark.

1974 BMW 2002 roof repair...

This presented as 2 small rust holes on the outer roof skin, but had actually rusted through 4 layers of steel. All repair sections were made by hand, in-house at the Hammer & Stump. 👌

Darren's beautiful Datsun Roadster is quite unique, with a FJ20 turbo conversion, it's a little faster than the average roadster. With a non standard drivetrain, the gearstick was also in a non standard location, and not wanting to destroy a rare original console, we fabricated a brand new console panel from scratch.

We accurately captured the dimensions of the original panel in CAD and CNC plasma cut the steel blank that was used to make the final piece shown

Hi all,

Apologies for the lack of updates over the last 6 months, things have been absolutely crazy here, but stay tuned for plenty of updates in the near future.

Here's a good looking 240Z that had some hidden surprises under that nice coat of paint. After coming in for a small rust patch repair we're neck deep in replacing panels now.

Radiator support panels, floors, sills, rails battery support tray, firewall, all need attention, but if there was ever a car that deserves love and attention it's this one.

Whilst we've been able to buy some replacement panels, some of this stuff just can't be bought so we've shaped a bunch of panels by hand to get the job done.

Should be an absolute stunner when it's all wrapped up.
