Euro 7 is the first regulation in the world to put a legal limit on brake dust. Here is what that means, in plain terms.

For decades, emissions rules focused on the exhaust pipe. Euro 6 largely solved that. But a car pollutes in more ways than one. Every time it brakes, the friction between pad and disc releases fine particles into the air. Until now, that was completely unregulated.

Euro 7 changes it. Under EU Regulation 2024/1257, brake particulate emissions face binding limits for the first time:

7 mg/km for combustion passenger cars.
3 mg/km for battery electric vehicles.

Today's conventional systems emit up to 40 mg/km. The gap is significant.
The timeline is already running. New type approvals for passenger cars start 29 November 2026. Heavy-duty vehicles follow in 2028. And this is becoming a global standard, with the UN adopting a harmonized measurement method in March 2026 and China preparing its own regulation.

So why should brake manufacturers care right now?

Because meeting these limits requires more than a new pad formulation. It requires engineered disc surfaces, typically through laser cladding, and it requires proof that every disc meets specification. Euro 7 also introduces the Environmental Vehicle Passport, which means quality data has to be documented and traceable per component.

The brake disc is moving from a low-cost commodity to a compliance-critical part. Manufacturers who prepare their production and quality processes now will have a clear advantage when the deadline arrives.

At ETF, this is exactly where we work: making coated brake disc production traceable, measurable, and Euro 7-ready.
