Indian stainless steel companies are shifting their focus to the domestic market to absorb capacity that was exported to the US. Although the US has suspended its reciprocal tariffs temporarily, previously announced steel and aluminum tariffs of 25% remain in effect.

Local manufacturer said the US import tariffs have created confusion for future trades. In addition, tariffs may change at any time, and the uncertainty leads to a lack of market confidence.

On the other hand, China, the world's largest steel producer, is likely to dump steel into the global market, posing a threat to the steel industry in various countries. The effects will be seen in the next three to four months.

One Indian steel mill pointed out that even in the face of price competition from China, Indian companies still have advantages because they can provide a large number of customized products and make extensive use of domestic raw materials.

India's domestic demand for stainless steel has been rising steadily, and its applications in railways and infrastructure have also expanded accordingly.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs announced that starting from May 7, 2025, products made in Taiwan (MIT) exported to the US must sign a declaration of origin to ensure the authenticity of the origin. Those who violate the rules and falsify origin or certificates will be given a warning or fined between NT$60,000 and NT$3 million. In serious cases, their import and export qualifications may be revoked.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs pointed out that after the US imposed different tariffs on various countries, this new measure was taken to prevent products from high-tax countries from being shipped to the US through Taiwan to circumvent tariffs, thereby damaging Taiwan's international reputation and the opportunity to obtain preferential tariffs.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs emphasized that the declaration of origin is not to restrict exports, but to cooperate with exporters to jointly prevent origin fraud and safeguard Taiwan’s trade interests and economic development.

Southern Steel Berhad, a Malaysian steelmaker, previously believed that a large amount of steel would flow into the Malaysian market to avoid other unfavorable markets. Therefore, Malaysia conducted an anti-dumping (AD) investigation on imported wire rods last year.

Recently, because the complainant has withdrawn the application, Malaysia has terminated the AD investigation on imported wire rods from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam, which will take effect from April 15, 2025.

The products involved are under HS codes 7213.91.1000, 7213.91.2000, 7213.91.9000, and 7227.90.9000.
