We've started back on rust repair on the El Camino. Inside the cubby behind the seat was a common rust spot due to water intrusion from the bed and back window. In a previous post we made a new quarter panel patch to hopefully access the rust from the outside instead of crawling about in a cramped space. Now we start removing and rebuilding the inner structure.

We had some new parts to fabricate for the front lower firewall. Once the floors were installed welded and seam sealed we painted the bottom and the firewall so we could mate the frame and body again. We still have more rust repair to do but for now we are going to move on for a little while back to another project.

Alright, so we've been quite busy with the end of the year and the start of this one. so I'm pretty behind on planning for the current year. We have some exciting stuff in the works. We are starting a social media campaign to continue to build our community. We will be weekly posting on Facebook, Instagram, tiktok, and YouTube. To be clear social media is not my passion nor is it in my skill set so hang in there as I try to make it a habit posting on each. The content will be slightly different for each. Facebook will consist of progress updates using pictures. Instagram will have unnecessarily dramatic video content of our work. Tiktok will be my feble and confusing attempt at humor. Youtube will have more serious content relating to behind the scenes of running a hotrod shop. Feel free to look us up on these platforms if you are interested in supporting us.

Lots of work has been done on the 62 Impala. The engine and transmission were caked in a thick layer of crusty grease and dirt. The engine, transmission, and suspension was all stripped cleaned and reassembled with new seals and a fresh coat of paint. With all new steering links, the frame is ready to be mated back to the body once the floors and rust repairs are finished.

We don't do much exhaust because we don't have all the special tools. But once in a while we get something like this GTO that needed a new rear end and the exhaust had to be removed to do so. My customer and I thought a side exit x pipe would be a better fit for this car. None of the x pipes I found on the market suited our needs and space. So we made one.

We have a 62 impala getting floors like our last one. This project will be done in multiple stages. Due to the level of rust, We had no structure to lift the body off on the rear so we had to get creative to lift it. Next week we will build a rolling cart to move it around without the frame.

We had a lot of brackets to install for the seats and center console. After welding prepping and seam sealing we will be installing spray in sound deadening. This project got extended a bit to have some more rust repaired so we will be taking a short break from it though to get progress on a new project.

We got the floors installed on the 79. The front lip of the aftermarket floor didn't fit very well to the fire wall so we had some modifications to do. I still have seam sealing and sound deadening to do but we are mostly done with this portion of the project.

I took some lessons from collision repair during this really rusty frame rail section replacement. A butted joint is less strong than a z shaped stager. By offsetting the length of the cut of the inside versus outside of the rail, you can nearly double the welding length of replacement parts. Long story short it's really strong.

We have spent a fair bit of time in rust repair on the body mount brackets. As well as stripping all the original floor brackets. The body mounts are going to need some work next. 3/12 body bolts came out. The rest either broke or spun.
