❄️Snow Removal Update:

Our snow crews have been working diligently to address the winter storm that began Thursday evening. Crews were out throughout the day and overnight to ensure our streets are safe and passable.

As of today, most of the primary arterial and collector streets are clear with bare pavement. We are continuing to widen and clear any remaining snow in these areas. Our focus has now shifted to residential streets, and we will continue work there throughout the evening.

Looking ahead, we will have on-call staff ready to address any slick spots as needed overnight. Based on current road conditions, we do not anticipate any significant refreeze.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to maintain safe roadways for all.

Stay safe, Hutchinson!

Keep Safe

Sedgwick County Public Works is fully prepared to tackle this winter storm with a well-stocked supply of materials and equipment! Crews are working diligently to clear roads, with extra attention to bridges, intersections and other critical areas.

Their dedication and readiness ensure our community stays safe and connected, no matter the weather. Thank you for your hard work! Drivers, please reduce your speed and respect the snowplows.

UPDATE (9:20 AM Jan. 5): The battle continues...

Our crews continue to plow snow from the primary routes to keep them passable until the snow stops later this evening. Visibility has been quite poor and with current snowfall rates, roads are covering about as fast as they are plowing them.

Our equipment is holding up well thanks to the hard work of our Fleet team and a vendor tech who was able to keep our fuel pumps running last night. The extreme cold is an additional challenge with this event.

Folks, PLEASE stay home unless it’s absolutely necessary for you to travel. Keeping cars off the road will reduce everyone’s risk in these low visibilities and make it easier for the plows to do their work.

Unfortunately, the heavy freezing rain that occurred late last night before precipitation changed over to snow did not afford us the opportunity to get into residential areas and treat the ice.

While the street crews continue their snow attack throughout today, our Manhattan Parks and Recreation staff will begin reporting later today with a focus on getting facilities opened up for Monday. Until the snow stops, though, progress will be slow.

UPDATE (5:30 PM Jan. 4): Our crews are continuing to treat primary routes and responding to emergency areas when needed. The treatment that is being put down is working well.

Crews have received multiple calls from Riley County EMS and the Manhattan Fire Department for assistance in areas where they have had to respond. Because of this, we have decided to treat residential streets after we have completed primary routes. Crews will treat residential streets throughout the night or until it starts to snow and they need to return to primary route treatment.

This has been a very stressful storm for our crews so far and has presented them with some unusual situations. They have performed above and beyond normal expectations under these circumstances and will continue to do so. Thank you to our community for all for your support and please stay safe tonight!

Wichita when a meteorologist says the words, “Snow” or “Ice.”
