🌿 What Should I Do With My Hostas After a Frost?

Your hostas looked lush and green all summer. Then frost arrived and seemingly overnight, those beautiful leaves turned yellow, brown, limp, or collapsed.

So, what should you do with them? Once frost has killed the foliage, hostas are generally good candidates for fall cleanup.

🍂 Wait until the foliage has died back: There’s no need to cut down healthy green leaves simply because it’s fall. Let the plant continue using them until frost naturally ends the growing season.

✂️ Cut back dead foliage: Once the leaves have yellowed, browned, or collapsed, use clean, sharp pruners to cut the foliage back to a few inches above the ground.

🧹 Clear away the debris: Remove the dead leaves from around the plant. Decaying hosta foliage can provide hiding places for slugs and snails and may harbor disease.

⚠️ Don't damage the crown: Avoid cutting into the crown of the plant at soil level. That’s where next year’s growth will emerge.

Once the cleanup is finished, leave the plant itself in place. Although everything above ground may seem to have disappeared, the hosta is a perennial. Its crown and roots remain dormant below ground, ready to produce new growth when spring returns. 🌱

Changing weather. Hungry critters. Your garden beds have plenty to contend with as the seasons shift!

A few thoughtful steps can help protect the plants you’ve worked hard to grow:

🛠️ Install sturdy frames to support protective coverings.
🐰 Choose secure wire or mesh barriers to discourage animal visitors.
🌡️ Match weather coverings to your plants’ needs, allowing ventilation to help prevent overheating.
💧 Check your hose for leaks and kinks so watering goes smoothly when needed.
🌱 Test your soil to guide fertilizer decisions.
🔎 Inspect beds regularly to catch damage, loose coverings, and other problems early.

A little preparation now can help keep your garden protected through the changing seasons! 🍂

🌲 American Symbols in Bloom: Eastern White Pine

Towering above the forests of eastern North America, the Eastern white pine has played an extraordinary role in America’s natural and cultural history.

Native to the northeastern United States and parts of the Appalachian region, these majestic evergreens can live for centuries and once formed vast forests containing some of the tallest trees in eastern North America. Their tall, straight trunks made white pine timber especially valuable for ship masts during the colonial era. ⛵

The Eastern white pine also carries a much older cultural significance. In the tradition of the Haudenosaunee, a confederacy of Native American nations, it’s known as the Tree of Peace. 🕊️ According to tradition, the Great Peacemaker chose the tree as a symbol when the original five nations—the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca—came together in peace. Its spreading branches came to represent their unity and the protection of the peace they established.

Today, the Eastern white pine is also the state tree of Maine and Michigan, reflecting another chapter in this remarkable native tree’s place in American history and culture.

💧 Watering Tip: Newly planted Eastern white pines need regular, deep watering while their roots become established. Mature trees generally tolerate short dry periods but benefit from supplemental water during prolonged drought, particularly before the ground freezes.

🇺🇸 Join us throughout America’s 250th year as we celebrate the flowers, trees, and plants that have become symbols of our nation’s heritage, beauty, and spirit.

💀 Nature’s Nightmares: Snapdragon Seed Pods (Antirrhinum majus) ☠️

For the final entry in our Nature’s Nightmares series, we’re uncovering a familiar flower’s hidden face. 👀

Snapdragons look perfectly innocent while they’re in bloom. Their colorful flowers brighten garden beds throughout the growing season. 🌸 But wait until the flowers fade! 🥀

As the seed capsules dry, small openings form in their surface. From the right angle, those openings make the pods look like miniature skulls lined up along the stalk. It’s a startling change for a flower most people associate with cheerful summer color.

The “faces” have a practical purpose: The openings allow mature seeds to escape and begin another generation of snapdragons. What looks like the end of the flower is part of its next beginning.

Have you ever seen the secret skulls hiding in a snapdragon patch? 💬 Let us know in the comments!

🖤 Nature’s Nightmares: Black Hollyhock (Alcea rosea ‘Nigra’)

A tall spire of hollyhocks can bring an old-fashioned charm to a garden. This one looks as though it belongs beside the gates of a haunted mansion. 🏚️

Rising 5 to 8 feet tall, ‘Nigra’ produces open flowers in such a deep chocolate-maroon shade that they can appear almost black, especially in shadow. Look more closely, and the dark petals frame a contrasting center.

It’s a dramatic effect made entirely by color—no strange smell, sinister trap, or poisonous berry required. For a Halloween garden, Black Hollyhock proves that a familiar flower can take on a completely different character after dark. 🧛

Would you grow these near-black blooms, or do you prefer your hollyhocks in brighter colors? 💬 Let us know in the comments!
