Pandemic Solutions

Pandemic Solutions Smart Air Defense is a supplier of one of the most cost effective air treatment technologies for K12. Our strategy is simple.

Our focus is K12 schools, and we are fully committed to making sure we help schools improve their indoor air quality to not only meet, but, more importantly, exceed guidelines and standards set by the EPA, CDC, and ASHRAE. We do our best to learn everything there is about a schools’ IAQ including but not limited to all HVAC systems in place, things your school has already accomplished with IAQ, wh

at has worked, what hasn’t worked, who the stakeholders are, what are the relationships with these stakeholders, what does budget allow, does the school have ESSER funds available and what other challenges is the school facing that is affecting decisions being made for IAQ. Our solutions follow principles of the Multi-Layered Air Defense System ™ (MLADS)- a concept that follows the simple strategy of using a few different products and technologies that include both passive and active IAQ technologies that work extremely well together. Our goal is to bring pragmatic solutions that are achievable for your school, but also meet and exceed EPA, CDC and ASHRAE guidelines and standards. In addition, because of the confidence we have with our solutions, we will always recommend onsite 3rd party validation to confirm that our options are performing. This kind of transparency ensures that stakeholders as well as parents and taxpayers alike are getting the most cost-effective solutions that actually work to make their schools IAQ the best it can possibly be. Lastly, any project we recommend will include air monitoring sensors that will track a wide variety of IAQ data – not just CO2 – so that we can continue to help you monitor your schools’ IAQ. Upgrading your IAQ is like anything else – it needs to be monitored. Remember that anything we propose will be - and in our eyes must be- pragmatic, which means that we are big believers of solutions that perform, but also don’t require a lot of maintenance. In addition, Smart Air Defense has strategically aligned with two organizations:
• Shared Air Solutions Consultants LLC (SASC), a physician led interdisciplinary consulting group focused on better IAQ. SASC has chosen Smart Air as one of their Preferred Partners because share the same ethos. It was SASC that trademarked the MLADS ™. A concept Smart Air always promoted.
• Protecall LLC, a national HVAC contracting company with extensive experience installing a wide range of IAQ products and technologies. Founder, Peter Cantone, is an entrepreneur who started several successful businesses always focused on providing real solutions.

When we look at what the future of IAQ in K12 is going to be, we can’t overlook ASHRAE 241.

On the surface, we know its focus is during Infectious Risk Management Mode (IRMM) or, in layman’s terms, during an indoor air quality crisis. A241 wants schools – during this air crisis – be it a bad flu season, a new RSV season, wildfire- to increase the EQUIVELANT CLEAN AIR to 40CFM/occupant.

Most schools with mechanical ventilation are passing code with ASHRAE Ventilation Standard 62.1 around 13-15CFM today (if everything is working the way it should.) Expecting a classroom to jump from 15CFM to 40CFM using conventional HVAC systems may require a major investment, but the new terminology of equivalent clean air, allows for proven air filtration strategies to be used to make recycled air equivalent clean air.

Can a school comply with ASHRAE 241 if its air handling units “have the ability” to bring in 50% more outdoor air? Sure. And this is where we need to be super careful. What if the IRMM lasts 1 month or 2 months during the winter and your school is in a northern climate zone? Are we being realistic about the ability to meet ASHRAE 241 for 2 straight months, during the winter, or are we just trying to check a box that says “we meet it” but when the time comes, the reality is – it is not sustainable.

What if we were able to add equipment to an existing HVAC system that allowed it to run as it normally does, but also helped the classroom comply with ASHRAE 241 not just during IRMM… but 24/7.

Here is the reality.

School budgets are super tight. EVERY SCHOOL DOLLAR needs to be invested with the intent to gain more than one linear return. Technology schools should be looking to invest in should be able to:
· Last a long time without having to replace it
· Require very little labor to maintain/easy maintenance
· Perform well: particle reduction, lower VOCs, inactivate viruses, kill mold and bacteria – while not increasing ozone or negative byproducts
· Be able to have its performance validated by a 3rd party (in the school not in lab)
· Be able to reduce the energy consumption
· Help complying with ASHRAE 241….24/7

Ideally – all the above should be achievable by a single technology/solution.

We are here to help.

One of the trends we have seen happening are schools purchasing IAQ sensors for their entire school district to begin capturing IAQ data as they continue to develop a broader IAQ game plan.

There aren’t many that are RESET Grade B accredited -meeting USGBC, Well and fitwel standards. Of those ones that do meet all of these – Atmocube is the most competitively priced.

Implementing portable air purifiers in K12 schools poses anticipated challenges:

*Instances of vandalism against units.
*Students tampering with control panels, disrupting functionality.
*Occasional oversight by teachers in activating or deactivating units.
*Continuous 24/7 operation increases energy usage and reduces filter longevity.
*Some units feature sensors with flashing lights, causing discomfort for teachers.
*Occurrences of theft targeting the units.
*Adjustments to lower speeds due to perceived loudness exceeding dB specifications.
*Variable filter replacement frequency, ranging from 1 to 6 times annually.
*Higher maintenance requirements leading to increased costs and a greater risk of neglected filter changes.
*Achieving over 5 air changes per hour with a HEPA filter under 50dB necessitates multiple units per classroom.
*Purifiers are typically positioned in corners or along one side, often on the floor, potentially drawing contaminated air across other students.

Despite good intentions during the pandemic, ongoing advocacy for portable units by state health departments raises concerns about addressing these challenges effectively.

The most efficient use of a HEPA filter is in the ceiling. Recently, we tested a high-powered (1,000 CFM+) and very quiet (under 50dB) HEPA ceiling-mounted unit in a classroom (740 sq ft x 10' ceiling) using SafeTraces. The unit passed both CDC 5ACH and UL Verified Ventilation and Filtration standards in a room lacking mechanical ventilation. The unit also has a proximity sensor (only on when people in class) so the HEPA filters have the ability to last 3+ years!

This development is groundbreaking and offers the potential to save school districts with old buildings lacking mechanical ventilation a significant amount of money. Take a moment to absorb the implications of this post.
