Quick tip for cattle show coordinators and arena operators 👇

When setting up portable cattle tie stalls, spacing matters more than most people realize.

Too close together: animals stress each other out, fight over space, and injuries go up. Judges also have a harder time moving efficiently through the line.

Too far apart: you waste floor space you don't have, especially at county fairs and indoor arenas with hard square footage limits.

A general rule of thumb for most beef breeds: 3.5 to 4 feet of tie rail space per animal. For dairy breeds or larger exotics, bump that to 4.5 feet. Always account for how the aisle space interacts with your pen layout — you need enough room for handlers to work safely.

Not all pen fencing is created equal — and in a commercial setting, the design of your panels directly affects animal welfare.

Here's what "non-climb" means and why it matters:

Standard wire or widely spaced fencing creates footholds. Animals — especially sheep, young pigs, and goats — will try to climb or push through gaps. Hooves get caught. Injuries happen. In a show pen with hundreds of animals cycling through, that's a real problem.

Non-climb design means vertical pickets spaced closely enough (our pens use ¾" pickets at 4" on center) that animals can't get a foothold or wedge themselves into the fence. It also prevents smaller animals from getting their heads stuck.

For facilities managing animal welfare liability — fairgrounds, 4-H shows, livestock arenas — this isn't just a "nice to have." It's the right standard.
