A fun look back...Development of the DDMWorks Pro-Beam began back in 2007 and our test Pontiac Solstice made sure we earned it! 😅
Our goal was to correct some of the chassis flex built into the Kappa platform while creating a brace that would still work with lowered cars and aftermarket exhaust systems. We designed several prototypes, bolted them up, and hit the back roads for some spirited testing and research (such a chore 🤣). Several prototype designs met an untimely demise thanks to our lowered test car and its aftermarket exhaust. They looked great on the computer, but the pavement had other plans!
Next came our “X-Brace.” It worked well and looked VERY cool from the rear, but lowered cars and center-exit exhaust systems still created clearance issues.
That’s when we spoke with GM Performance and SCCA racing engineers about the weaknesses they had discovered in the Kappa chassis. Surprisingly, the main issue wasn’t the two lower rear control-arm mounts, it was the crossmember supporting the rear of the differential.
Although the factory crossmember looks substantial, it’s actually made from thin metal filled with foam, allowing it to flex under load. That’s why ZOK-equipped Kappas received a heavier-duty version. After inspecting GM’s factory improvements, we engineered the Pro-Beam to provide similar reinforcement without requiring additional steel to be welded into the car.
Then came the fun part: more testing! 🏁 The Pro-Beam survived more than 10,000 miles of back-road abuse on vehicles lowered as much as two inches with low-profile tires. We also verified fitment with stock and several aftermarket exhaust systems.
The final DDMWorks Pro-Beam ties the differential crossmember directly to the suspension mounting points, reinforcing the factory structure. Made from high-quality seam-welded steel and finished in a durable powder coat, the Pro-Beam delivers added strength, improved rear chassis stability, and more confidence behind the wheel. Best of all, it installs using basic hand tools and an electric drill.
And yes, that’s Ivy’s hand under the ProBeam, risking a manicure to show that it can support the weight of the rear wheel! 😄
