Installing a window buck and setting the window out from the container creates the depth needed for the insulation assembly to meet the opening cleanly - whether you’re using InSoFast panels or X-Brackets with closed-cell spray foam.

Build the opening first. Then insulate around it.

If you are using the X-Bracket System and sprayfoam as your exterior container insulation, it is best to use outset windows and buck accordingly so the sprayfoam bonds to exterior buck.

Here’s a closer look at the roof skeleton when the X-Brackets are applied over shingles ⬇️

We recently showed that the X-Bracket System can be installed over existing shingles on the right retrofit. These photos give you a better look at how the brackets and furring strips come together around the roof corners and transitions before spray foam is applied.

Once this framework is complete, closed-cell spray foam fills the insulation plane, followed by the new roof deck and finished roofing system.

No full tear-off just to create the new exterior insulation layer.

Why did this builder move from traditional sheet foam insulation to X-Brackets + spray foam?

For him, it came down to labor and consistency.

Sheet foam depended heavily on how accurately each piece was measured, cut, fitted, and sealed by the crew. With X-Brackets, his team can focus on framing the assembly, then bring in a professional spray foam contractor to complete the insulation layer.

Spray foam may cost more upfront, but less cutting, fitting, gap filling, and rework can save a lot of labor on the job.
