Can gummies support better adherence for people who struggle with traditional dosage forms?
It is a topic I keep seeing more often in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and functional gummy development.
For gummy brands, the first product question is simple:
That is where palatability matters.
A 2023 study in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin gives a useful example.
Researchers prepared experimental aripiprazole gummies using a commercially available aripiprazole medicine.
They evaluated palatability in small groups of young, healthy volunteers.
Among the fruit-flavoured aripiprazole gummies tested, the grapefruit-flavoured sample showed the highest overall palatability scores.
For me, the useful signal is clear:
Taste masking and acceptability should be evaluated before a gummy format is assumed to be easier to take.
A gummy may look friendly.
But bitterness, aroma, sweetness, hardness, mouthfeel, dose, and aftertaste can all change daily use.
The next question is whether that result can hold up in scale-up.
That is where many gummy projects become harder.
A formula that works in a small test still needs to behave well in real processing.
For gummies with active ingredients, dosing accuracy and viscosity control can affect how the gummy mass deposits.
That may show up as weight variation, shape issues, texture change, or slower downstream handling.
This is why
Capacity matters.
But capacity does not show whether the line can handle the productโs real risks.
Early production planning helps avoid a line that looks good on paper but struggles with the real product.
The goal is not just a better-tasting gummy.
The goal is a repeatable gummy that people can take again tomorrow.
That is where adherence becomes a practical manufacturing question.
What is the biggest scale-up challenge you have seen in gummy projects?
Taste masking, depositing, mould release, drying, or packaging?
