We are proud to support the next generation of engineers as they push the limits of EV performance. The University of Manitoba Formula Electric team is currently utilizing neoVI PI, powered by Raspberry Pi, to revolutionize their data acquisition process.

Known as Polar Bear Racing, the student-led team designs an open-wheel electric formula-style race car each year to compete in international competitions hosted by University of Manitoba Student Chapter of SAE International (UMSAE) and its associates.

As part of Polar Bear Racing, students are exposed to a variety of engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering.

🏎️ How the Students are Using neoVI PI Compute:

💻 Centralized Data Logging: The team uses neoVI PI as a compact, centralized hub to log real-time data from the CAN bus, connecting critical sensors like shock pots, brake temperature sensors, and thermistors.

✅ Custom Python Development: Because the device is based on Raspberry Pi, students are not limited to proprietary tools. They utilize Intrepid’s Python API alongside standard Python libraries to develop a custom codebase tailored to their car’s specific needs.

🧐 Live Performance Monitoring: Using the onboard NVMe storage, the team can send live telemetry to a laptop terminal for real-time views of torque requests and sensor outputs during bench testing.

📈 Advanced Simulation & Debugging: With Vehicle Spy, students perform simulation work, graphing, and replay trials to conduct targeted debugging of their electrical systems.
