1. Balance the water
2. Clean the filter and note the pressure
3. Lower the water below the returns
4. Blow the lines and plug them
5. Drain the pump, filter and heater
6. Pull the ladder and rails
7. Cover goes on last

Pool pump will not hold prime? Before you price a new pump, open the strainer lid and look at the o-ring.

A dry, flat or nicked o-ring stops the lid sealing, so the pump pulls air instead of water. It is the cheapest thing on the list to rule out.

A pump that will not hold prime is usually not a dead pump. It is air getting in somewhere, and the strainer cover o-ring is the first place to look. Every solar cover has one bad week a year. It comes off wet, heavy and covered in leaves, and it gets dragged across the deck because there is nowhere to put it.
