Off the ice for the year and not time to get the boat out so watching auto racing, one of my favorite pastimes. Today it just happens to be NHRA drag racing at Gainesville Raceway in Florida. And who do the announce is attending the show today? None other the Don “Big Daddy” Garlits. If you sat in high school in the 60s, and 70s reading Hot Rod Magazine ( remember the little ones) Don Garlits was your hero. Remember all the Swamp Rat dragsters, the things he brought to the sport, blowers, small front tires, rear engines, and a lot more. At 94 years old he, still a racers hero to at lot of us. Thanks “Big Daddy

Just a week until the Green Bay Boat Show 2026, where I'll be sharing expertise on Walleye fishing in the Bay of Green Bay, Perch fishing around Sturgeon Bay, and the thrill of collecting vintage fishing gear. Check the schedule below for seminar times on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. As the weather shifts, it's time to gear up for open water fishing and make the most of the new season. Great time to check out what’s new in boats and motors. Hope to see you there. . . . . . . . .

Today I’m going to retire and old hunting friend, it’s my old old orange hunting jacket. I’ve been delaying this for several years. But, you can see the cuffs are worn out, one pocket has come unattached, and the lining is worn out. It’s still hard to let go of a trusty friend who’s been to Wyoming, Missouri, Pennsula Park for the muzzle loader hunt, all 3 several times. It’s been with me to all my Door County rifle and muzzle loader hunts. This jacket has the best pockets which carried my peanut butter and jelly and ham sandwich’s to the hunt faithfully each year. They don’t have huge pockets in the newer jackets. As you can see it’s got a back tag holder on the back which we don’t need any more. And, it’s got a handy sling holder on the shoulder to keep my rifle sling from sliding off that came off my Dads hunting jacket. I’ll put it on my new jacket because it works so well. My new jacket has be waiting for me to do this for probably 5 years now, but still hard to part with such a trusty friend. I won’t be throwing out the old one, it will hang in mylog cabin with all the other jackets, so I can remember all the good days it provided me

So how’s fishing been? Well, we HAD some great perch fishing going on while the weather was cooler but when it got hot out again it definitely slowed. With water temps back in the high 60s the perch kind of quit biting. That will change with the normal temps in the forecast. The great news is the number of young of the year fish in the harbors. We have seen some small large mouth bass and walleye biting which is a good sign for the future. But early last week on a morning of flat calm water there was thousands of young perch feeding the surface. Everywhere you looked the surface was alive with perch. That means that future perch fishing should be very good. That should keep us perch anglers happy! . . . . . .

The definite highlight of the 40th Kids Fishing Day was having Door County Custom Meats serving up the Burgers, Hot Dogs and Brats! If we heard it once we heard it 25 times “those are the best brats I’ve ever had” and even today I’ve heard it a half a dozen more times. A big Thank You for making our 40th extra great. . .

Another successful Kid’s Fishing Day is completed with just under 50 Kids having a ball catching fish at Sunset Park. Lots of bluegills, bullheads, some perch, smallmouth, carp, gobe and even some snapping turtles kept the kids busy. A fun day by the Lake and noticeable was no kids had time for their phones. Just so much fun watching them get excited landing a fish, rushing over to the measuring table and getting a picture of them with their catch. Sure makes it well worth it. Already looking forward to next year. . . . . . # . . .
