Shock loading can destroy a wire rope in seconds.

The rope in this photo shows birdcaging, a clear sign the rope has experienced internal core failure. When this happens, the rope’s integrity is compromised and it must be removed from service immediately.

Regular inspections and proper lifting practices are critical to preventing failures like this.

Ways to avoid shock loading:
• Take slack out slowly before lifting
• Lift loads smoothly—no sudden starts or stops
• Never jerk or sn**ch a load
• Ensure loads are properly balanced
• Follow working load limits (WLL)
• Perform routine wire rope inspections

KAM Industrial Services provides both OSHA Frequent and OSHA Periodic crane inspections for our customers.

KAM Industrial Services recently completed structural modifications to an existing building to support the addition of new 1-ton jib crane.

Our customer needed additional lifting capability within their facility, and the existing structure required reinforcement to safely handle the added loading.

Scope of work included:

✔ Structural modifications to accommodate increased thrust, axial load, and overturning forces
✔ Installation of mounting brackets and stiffener plates
✔ Certified welding of brackets to existing building columns
✔ Installation of jib crane and hoist

All work was completed per engineered drawings and structural specifications to ensure long-term performance and safety.

Williamsport, Pa. — Thanks to the generosity of two companies, Pennsylvania College of Technology has a new crane system in its 55,000-plus-square-foot welding facility.
