Institute for Clean Energy Technology - ICET Center for Excellence in Nuclear Filtration, Ventilation, and Radiation Detection Research

25/05/2026

This Memorial Day, we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

A WWII memorial commemorating U.S. veterans can be found on MSU's campus outside Nusz Hall, home of the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Center for America’s Veterans.

ICET has an inventory of hundreds of nuclear-grade filters on site. These filters represent a wide variety of manufacturers, configurations, and time spent in storage. Filters are stored in accordance with requirements from ASME NQA-1 and DOE-STD-3020. This inventory is a unique resource that supports ICET's efforts in research and testing.

ICET's director emeritus Charles Waggoner was honored in 2021 with the Department of Energy’s Distinguished Career Service Award.
“Dr. Waggoner’s work led the industry and the accompanying codes down a path to withstand harsh conditions and accidents, to provide better protection for workers, the environment, and the public across the nuclear industry,” said Acting Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management William I. White in the award presentation. “The test program at MSU ICET is Dr. Waggoner’s crowning career achievement, and it will continue to be an asset to DOE and to the future of the nuclear industry.”

A former Mississippi State research center director is being recognized with a prestigious career honor from the U.S. Department of Energy.

ICET’s Salt Loading Test Apparatus provides for the evaluation of HEPA filter media performance during and after salt loading. This test stand allows us to collect data from aerosol loading, cyclic humidity and temperature exposure, differential pressure testing, aerosol pe*******on, and humid-condition aerosol effects. Salt loading of filter media and deliquescence of aerosolized salts can be evaluated through subsequent microscopy analysis.
Like many of our test stands this equipment was build entirely in-house by our dedicated fabrication shop.

Today is World Laboratory Day and we are taking a look at some of the laboratory services available at the Institute for Clean Energy Technology.
ICET is capable of testing for: surface integrity via sorbtion behavior; material compositional changes; elemental mapping; deposition and loading characteristics; particle size and morphology; and dynamic mechanical behavior.
We also do NQA-1 AG-1 media qualification testing for HEPA filter media, including airflow resistance and particle pe*******on; tensile strength and elongation; water repellency; combustible content; and thickness determination.

Waste Management Symposia 2026 brought together global leaders in nuclear cleanup, including Assistant Secretary Tim Walsh. We couldn't do what we do without the support of the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management. DOE has ambitious plans for the future and we are excited for the role we will play at ICET.

The Office of Environmental Management participated in the 52nd annual Waste Management Symposia from March 8-12 where Assistant Secretary Tim Walsh introduced an inspiring new vision for EM. March 17, 2026
