Oh Bouys! Buoys in the Iowa Great Lakes (Okoboji) are navigational and safety markers placed by the Lake Patrol to warn of shallow reefs, restrict speeds, and mark, no-wake zones. Read on for tips in Okoboji.

As a reminder: Key buoys include black/white striped markers (avoid passing between these and shore), orange diamond buoys (hazards), and orange circles (5 MPH/300-ft limit)...

Key Buoy Types & Meanings in Okoboji
Black/White Vertical Stripes: These signify shallow water or underwater hazards (reefs) near the shore. Do not pass between these buoys and the shore.

White with Orange Circles (300 Foot/5 MPH): Indicates a 5 MPH speed restriction within 300 feet of shore, common for protecting docks and swimmers.

White with Orange Diamond & Cross: Marks prohibited areas for boats, specifically used for designated swimming zones and beaches.

White with Blue Stripe: Used specifically for mooring (anchoring) a boat.

Key Locations and TipsHazard Areas: Key hazardous areas with buoys include Manhattan Point, Gull Point, Pillsbury Point, and East Okoboji Narrows.Lighted Buoys: For safety, several buoys marking reefs, such as at Pikes Point and Fort Dodge Point, have lights for navigation in the dark.
