A recent report from the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society (SPUMS) and the UK Diving Medical Committee (UKDMC) is raising awareness about immersion pulmonary oedema (IPO)—a serious and potentially fatal condition that can occur during diving.

The report strongly advises that divers who’ve experienced IPO should not dive again due to the high risk of recurrence, which could have fatal consequences.
Immersion pulmonary oedema happens when fluid builds up in the lungs during diving, leading to severe breathing difficulties. While rare, it’s a life-threatening condition that highlights the importance of understanding the risks associated with diving and ensuring proper medical evaluation before continuing the activity.

For anyone in the diving community—whether recreational or professional—this is critical information to stay informed and safe.

Tip for the Audience:

🚨 Never go in after someone who is drowning – you could become a victim too.

What you can do instead is mark the spot on the shore where you're standing, look directly across from that point, and when the dive team arrives, tell them, "I was right here, and the victim went down right there."

This information can help the team locate the victim on the first or second sweep.

Interesting data shared by the World Health Organization

Drowning deaths have dropped by 38% globally since 2000—a big win for public health! But here’s the flip side: over 300,000 people still lose their lives to drowning every year.

Key insights from the report:
→ 90% of drowning deaths happen in low- and middle-income countries.
→ Children under 5 are the most at risk, especially without adult supervision.
