Taking a trip down Memory Lane…

Before there was a Gerrity’s Ace Hardware or Gerrity’s The Fresh Grocer, there was Gerrity’s Market.

Remember the corner grocery? This photo from the Scranton Times archive captures an early version of Gerrity's market in 1968, before the supermarkets of today. William Gerrity opened a butcher shop in 1895 on Railroad Avenue; his son Joe is shown here at the butcher counter of his store at 150 N. Main Avenue. In the late 1970s, Joe Gerrity retired and sold the business to Neal Fasula, who had started working as a delivery boy in 1964. Today, the Fasula family operates 10 grocery stores in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties, maintaining the Gerrity name.
