Strengthening Sustainable Water Services in Rural Kenya
In April, WEFTA, in partnership with SAWASHI (Safe Water And Sustainable Hygiene Initiative - Sawashi) and WEFTA circuit rider, David Kurgat, convened a high-impact capacity-building workshop in Kapsabet Town, Kenya, bringing together Water User Committees, technicians, and public health officers from Nandi and Kakamega counties. The workshop marked an important step forward in shifting rural water systems from infrastructure-focused investments to sustainable, service-oriented delivery.

WEFTA and SAWASHI remain committed to advancing sustainable water services that not only deliver infrastructure — but ensure it works, endures, and transforms lives.

Solving Problems and Helping Meet Real Needs
Marty Howell had two goals in becoming an engineer: He wanted to solve problems and he wanted to help meet real needs. In volunteering with WEFTA, he is doing both, earning the gratitude of many in the process.

Marty is touched by the gratitude of those who benefit from WEFTA’s services and notes the great value they place on WEFTA’s maintenance of long-term relationships with them. He believes that those long-term relationships demonstrate commitment and create deeper engagement.

We appreciate Marty’s great efforts and are very pleased that he is helping WEFTA solve problems and meet some of the very real needs of this world!

WEFTA continues to advance sustainable, community-driven water solutions in San Miguelito, El Salvador, where a network of five independent gravity-fed systems serves approximately 160 households.

By increasing source efficiency, improving conveyance, and enhancing system integration, the San Miguelito water systems are becoming more resilient, better balanced, and more capable of meeting community needs—particularly during the dry season.

Work will continue in coordination with the local water committee to build on this progress and further improve reliability across all sub-systems.

WEFTA PARTICIPATES IN GLOBAL CONFERENCE ON WASH IN HEALTHCARE FACILITIES
WEFTA president and co-founder, Peter Fant, P.E., will participate in an April 22-23, global conference of stakeholders intent on accelerating solutions to WASH issues in healthcare facilities. The meeting, titled “Committed to WASH in Healthcare Facilities – A Gathering in Rome of Faith-based Organizations and Allies to Accelerate Progress,” will be held in Vatican City under the patronage of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

According to a Vatican press release, the World Health Organization reports that across 60 low-resource countries, 37% of healthcare facilities lack basic water services, and 81% lack basic sanitation services.

Through the Vatican 150 Initiative, WEFTA has completed numerous projects in five African nations, implementing improvements that strengthen healthcare delivery, reduce infection risks, and improve patient dignity.

Over 100 leaders, experts, and field practitioners from both faith-based and secular organizations are expected to attend the historic conference. May this meeting of the minds truly accelerate progress toward WASH solutions in healthcare settings!

WEFTA continues to advance sustainable water solutions in partnership with the Daughters of Charity International Project Services for the Sisters in San Martín- Awajún, Peru.

In March 2026, a Circuit Ride visit to the Awajún community by our partner, Engineer Julio Sanchez of CONSES, confirmed that the school’s rainwater harvesting and water purification systems are operating effectively, providing uninterrupted access to safe water despite ongoing disruptions to the municipal supply. Engineer Julio designed and implemented the WASH system upgrade for the Sisters in late 2025.

Clean Water Restores Health, Dignity, and Hope in Shiseso, Kenya
For years, communities surrounding Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Shiseso Parish faced a daily struggle for water. Rainwater systems ran dry for months in the Kakamega County community located in western Kenya. Families relied on unsafe sources, and the nearby health center was left without running water, compromising patient care and basic hygiene.

Through a partnership between WEFTA and Safe Water And Sustainable Hygiene Initiative - Sawashi , and with strong leadership from the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega and the local community, a sustainable water and sanitation system now serves approximately 3,000 people across the parish, Bishop Obanyi School, Shiseso Model Health Centre, and neighboring households.

Happy World Health Day!
Good health starts with safe water for drinking, cooking, and bathing. Unfortunately, safe water is a “missing link” in many developing countries, resulting in waterborne illness, leading to lost days of school, work, and overall productivity. WEFTA’s water, sanitation, and hygiene projects in the Americas and Africa aim to boost human potential by making safe, abundant water a reality.
