Arguably the best building in northern Utah, the natural history museum sits high in the salt lake valley. The facade uses local copper from the Kennecott copper mine, hiding the canyon-like interior behind it. University of Utah students get in for free…pretty nice perk.

This was my first time over in B-gates since the recent completion of the central tunnel at the Salt Lake International Airport. I don’t wander off to the dark side very often. I had a bit of time to go and explore the B-gates in the Salt Lake International Airport. I haven’t been over to the dark side since the new central tunnel was completed. I’m slightly late to the party. It’s always nice to see more great pieces of Gordon Heuther’s work.

I had a trip planned to go out and see the sun tunnels and photograph the Milky Way this weekend. The heavy wind got the best of me trying to shoot the night sky…but the sunrise out at the tunnels is a MUST see. Beat the crowd out there and you’ll have a prime spot for your camera.

Constructed in 1973 by Nancy Holt, these large tunnels line up perfectly with the winter + summer solstice’s. The 4 tunnels are positioned in a large X, framing the sun in the center as it sets and rises. The small holes on the side of the tubes are to cast projections of constellations on the inside. Ones that are visible during that solstice. Truly one of those “if you know, you know” type places. Now you know.
