Compressed gas cylinders are essential to our operations, but they also store significant energy. A damaged or improperly handled cylinder can become extremely dangerous in seconds. Safe handling is not optional, it is critical.

Here are key safety reminders when working with compressed gas cylinders:

1. Secure Cylinders at All Times
Cylinders must always be stored upright and secured with a chain or strap to prevent tipping. An unsecured cylinder can fall, damaging the valve and potentially turning the cylinder into a projectile.

2. Protect the Valve
The valve is the most vulnerable part of the cylinder. Always:
Keep valve protection caps in place when cylinders are not in use.
Avoid dropping or striking cylinders.
Never lift a cylinder by the cap.

3. Use Proper Transport Methods
Use a cylinder cart designed for compressed gas cylinders.
Secure cylinders during transport.
Never drag, roll, or slide cylinders.
Do not lift cylinders with magnets or slings unless designed for that purpose.

4. Know Your Gas
Different gases have different hazards:
Flammable gases require ignition source control.
Oxidizers increase fire risk.
Inert gases can displace oxygen.
Toxic gases require proper ventilation and monitoring.
Always read the label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use.

5. Store Properly
Keep cylinders in well-ventilated areas.
Separate incompatible gases (for example, oxygen and fuel gases)
Keep away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
Follow site-specific storage guidelines.

6. Inspect Before Use
Before connecting a regulator:
Check for damage, leaks, or corrosion.
Verify the correct regulator for the gas type.
Ensure fittings are clean and free of oil or grease (especially for oxygen)

7. Close Valves When Not in Use
When work is complete:
Close the cylinder valve.
Release pressure from the regulator.
Replace the valve cap if the cylinder is disconnected.

Compressed gas cylinders are safe when respected and handled properly. Taking a few extra moments to secure, inspect, and store cylinders correctly protects not only you, but everyone around you.
