I've always been drawn to the unusual projects that come through the shop doors. People aren't afraid of asking me "can you make.....?"

Over the years i have made copper cauldron covers, copper doors in chimneys (hollow core complete with jams). Dabbled in a few artistic endeavors...

So I couldn't help myself when I saw this window sitting on the floor. Severely deformed, broken glass everywhere, one corner that really you couldn't call a corner anymore.

A skylight built well before all of our time decided the third floor roof was no longer where it wanted to be.

Chicken wire glass, the cap held on by twisted copper wire, this thing has to be at least 100 years old.

I started poking around really just curious on how things were made and assembled. How did they do this and that. Which turned into, hmmm can I make that piece?

By the time Eric came back he said "you might as well keep on going". It's always fun working with Coastal Copper and Slate again. We still share knowledge and projects from time to time. I can say this one was a pleasure.

More like copper surgery, very time consuming. I built a wooden plug, then started putting the pieces around it. Keeping templates of the size of the glass handy to keep the openings honest. Slowly soldering, flipping, cleaning and polishing.

Setting the glass went well, they all fit without any extra "help" 😁

The top cap was tricky, went through a dry fit on the window with glass in place. To being tacked in place to keep the shape which was sketchy because one drop of solder on the glass or too much heat was making me nervous. Then a final time once removed from the window to get everything soldered.

I can't wait to see it in place, it will shine and be beautiful for a for weeks before starting it's color fazes of patina.

Nothing like crossing a little ocean to get to work. Mornings in Maine ❤️

Definitely the toughest job we've ever done..... physically, location, and mother nature all to the max

Such great pride all of us put in on this job. We feel both honored and accomplished completing our city's crown jewel.

Thank you to Coastal Copper & Slate for the opportunity, the city of Rockland for trusting it in our hands, and the men I got to work alongside everyday that made this project possible.

We battled, showed up and put in the work. Cooked many meals and roughly 50 pounds of bacon (a necessity like the mushroom to Mario). We coined phrases like "I'm not impressed" and "fight it off!!"
Got buzzed by drones, and had a few brave souls that wanted to know if they could use the Porto potty ( picture trying to use the bathroom inside a washing machine). The ocean repeatedly tried to take our stuff, and managed to break a few things. Weather was everything Maine could offer, 45 one day..ice the next. We worked in 40 mph winds and negative temperatures. By the end we didn't even care about the weather because we had already been in worse and the captain stopped asking if "we were going" lol.
We finished on a rewarding 45 degree day just like we started, but with a feeling of accomplishment.

This will remain my favorite job site forever

To call this week a struggle would be laughable. But words like resilience, dedication, and maybe a dash of foolishness come to mind. But we are always up for a challenge...It's the very reason we are here taking on quite possibly the toughest job site we have faced. Because this team is the most qualified to do so!!

A job like no other.....

The winds moved men and the ocean flooded the job site.

We fought at the beginning of the week thinking the strong winds were the worst. Until we got there Wednesday morning and the ocean was trying to steal our stuff lol.

We wrangled everything back, secured it, and built everything back better. (We hope)

The building continues to surprise us as we dig in more in all good ways. The wood on the building is extremely solid with only a few bad spots here and there. The slates are in good condition, and are actually quite unique. Almost a copper tiger stripe to them, with a few that have knots, flow marks, and bubbles.

Wooden gutters look excellent, we've cleaned them and are getting ready to line them with copper to preserve it for many decades to come.

Not many aquatic visitors, a few brave souls that walked out thru the crashing waves though.

Hard work equals great lunches, this weeks lunches were....Tacos, kraut dogs, meatball subs and steak with garlic green beans.

A day of challenge rewarded with a rainbow at the end.

Those steady November winds have moved in, abrasive, almost bullying at times. But we hung in there 😁

We made good progress today, tho conditions would be challenging alone...as a team, we had no troubles. Five sets of hands quickly became one as we all moved forward getting more safety precautions up and another section down in slate.

No pots of gold were found, but we are still wishing for a brave pizza delivery. 😎

Well, the first week is done.

We've moved, barged, moved and set up a mountain of staging on a very small rock. We've taken the first section of slates off and had a chance to see what's hiding underneath. Everything appears solid at this point, and we will begin to get the upper section off.

The first week we had many questions from visitors, a few visits from a local seal, and buzzed by drones. Today (Friday), we had the pleasure of watching a pod of porpoises glide around the breakwater with a few getting close.

Smells from the cooking shack this week included, BBQ cheeseburgers, BLT's , cheddar brats, breakfast burritos and steak and cheese. We might see if Dominos is up for a challenge 😁

It truly has been a great week with an awesome group, they crushed it!!

Your treasure is in good hands Rockland. Every one of us has immense pride and craftsmanship going into this project. We are all proud to work on this special place.

More progress to come 😊
