The SF Bay Oystertecture Project

The SF Bay Oystertecture Project oystertecture
oysters + architecture WHAT is the SF Bay Oystertecture Project? The short answer: Oysters + Architecture. I am building homes for oysters. great!

The longer answer: I am trying to improve bay health, and help to reestablish a once thriving oyster population in the San Francisco Bay. Oysters do amazing things for our waters (like clean them), and humans have done a good job at ruining the natural oyster habitat in the bay over the past century or so. WHY do it? The SF Bay Oystertecture Project is a product of my training in landscape archite

cture (steward of the land, service to the public) and being raised at the NJ shore. It's also heavily influenced by my love of fishing. I want to eat the fish that I catch in the Bay without worry. Maybe someday this will be possible. WHERE is the SF Bay Oystertecture Project located? There is an Oyster Basket in the Richmond Marina, and an oyster float in OCSC's docks in the Berkeley Marina. HOW can I participate? Message me! Do you have a dock slip? If so, you might be eligible for an oyster basket. Do you have a LARGE dock slip? You might be eligible for an oyster float! THANKS. This project would not be possible without the help of the following organizations and people:
Thanks to my marketing manager and general encourager, Ashley Cruz
Thanks to The Watershed Project for lending me equipment (oyster float) and giving me advice
Thanks to Anthony Sandburg at OCSC for letting me use some water space, and being open to the project. Thanks to Cyd Ortzow for helping me with construction
Thanks to Blind Tiger in Oakland for saving me oyster shells. go get a drink! and to Lisa Dombroski for hooking me up with the Blind Tiger
Thanks to Nate! who has an awesome barge. Thanks to you for visiting.

It's been a long while since the last update:
After months of checking for oyster growth,we decided to remove the float from OCSC due to lack of success.

Our friends at also reported slow growth. In fact, they saw much at the reef this year due to the low salinity levels in the bay.

Stay tuned for more updates! We are planning for other locations and materials to test oyster habitability

August 10 2016: visit to 'The Barge' in Richmond. (late post)

Good news, there is some spat present! Hopefully the September visit will have a larger population. Check out the attached photo from August.

No spat present yet, but check out the other organisms have moved into the oystertecture "houses", including:

Crustacean Amphopod - "Caprella"
solitary tunicate (“sea-squirt”)
bryozoans

The SF Bay Oystertecture project has been in the water for 1 month; time to check in!

I saw some small, early stage oyster spat, but it is still too early be certain of the ultimate oyster success. There was, however, a ton of other marine-life success.

As a result, I will be going back twice monthly to check on the projects and clean out algae, etc.
