In a recent interview I talked about the 1968 movie, “The Graduate.” One of the guests in a graduation party scene told the lead character, Ben, that he had one word for him: “Plastics.”

That word has stayed with me subliminally and influenced my career and life ever since. My Father and the Greatest Generation:

Today, our nation and allies mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landing. On June 6, 1944, some 4,900 allied troops lost their lives in the defense of democracy and freedom. I wonder if our media today will even take note of this anniversary today.

At this time of year, I always think about my father and the courage that was needed to parachute from a plane at night. Not just a training jump, but a real jump and you had no idea what your fate would be when you reached the ground. The men who parachuted from airplanes, boated through the surf, and stormed the beaches were a part of what our country has come to call The Greatest Generation. The D-Day invasion marked the turning point of World War II. There were heroes on the battlefield that day.

There were heroes on the home front too: machinists, tool makers and inventors. All of whom who were building our way to victory. Think about American manufacturing in the 1940’s: no CNC machines, no digital readouts, no calculators, no air-conditioned manufacturing plants with bright LED lighting. Just the purpose and will to get the job done.
