"What the forks?"
"Yes the forks on your lift are worn."

A common over sight on forklifts are the condition of the forks. Most operators will spot a severely damaged fork on thier lift. However some if not the majority of wear and damage is missed on a brief walk-around of the lift itself.

The most overlooked area of fork wear is also the most crucial point. This is known as the Heel. This is found on the bottom of the fork by the shank. This spot is where load is most exerted on the forks themselves. This is also a section is often rubbed or dragged on the ground by the operator, and subject to the most wear. The heel section should be just as thick as the shank ( the upright portion) of the forks. Wear greater than 10% on the heal is a loss of 20% of the forks load capacity. This wear of 10% could lead to failure of the fork and is reason enough to remove the forks from service.

Operators please consider this in your pre-op inspection. Example: a fork is 2" thick on the shank, and the heal measures 1 3/4"; this fork has worn 12.5% and is no longer safe to remain in service. If you know a fork to be worn or damaged give us a call and we will gladly give you a quote for fork replacement over the phone at no cost to you.

We will talk more about more fork inspections and safety in coming posts. If you have more questions or concerns right now feel free to contact us. We will be happy to share all we can with you.

If you have some spare time check your Vehicle's transmission oil.

To check it, park your vehicle on a level surface. Vehicle should be running and at operating temperature when you remove the dip stick. Most dipsticks will have an area marked for cold and hot. Since the vehicle is at operating temperature the area marked hot is what should be observed.

Is it filled to proper level? Is it a nice red color? ( If color is hard to distinguish, Wipe the dipstick on a white rag. The white rag will expose the color effectively. ) If your transmission fluid is low top off with a manufactured specified transmission fluid only. If it is Dark burgundy, Brown or even Black in color consider servicing the transmission as soon as you can. Also some manufacturers do not equip a vehicle with a dipstick for your transmission anymore. Consult your owners manual on service intervals. Or give us a call to have your transmission inspected or serviced.

Clean good oil is essential for modern engines. Consider checking your oil today. Is it at the proper level? What color is it? When was it changed last?Does it smell of Gasoline? Those are some things you should consider on a regular basis with your vehicle. All too many put trust in claims like "lasts up to 10,000 miles!". Or even blindly trusting the 'oil life %' reading in your Vehicle's info console. Most never dare to pop the hood and check for themselves; all the while those same individuals are a quart or more low. Check your oil.

"How much can skipping oil changes affect your budget? Oh, plenty. Oil problems can be some of the costliest car maintenance issues to fix, since oil affects pretty much everything your car does. So don’t skip it. Getting your oil (and filter) changed costs around $35-75. For the price of a family dinner at a higher-end fast food joint, you’ll lower the risk of wearing out your engine—which costs a lot more than burgers and fries to replace." - Ramsey Solutions
