We often get asked about methods and which is best for certain types of components. Here’s what you need to know.

Open die forging is great for cylindrical shapes, upset or “pancake” shapes, hollow forgings, and contour-type forging. This can include things like discs, rings, spindles, and more. If you need to produce a more specific shape, closed die forging would be the better choice. And then there’s rotary forging, which is ideal for components that feature large and complex geometries. This can include processes like ring rolling, spinning, and more.

When it comes to , there are three main options to choose from: open die forging, closed die forging, and rotary forging.

In open die forging, heated metal is hammered on top of an anvil, allowing it to be shaped into something new and different. With closed die forging, the dies are custom made in specific shapes and the metal is encased within the dies used.

Here at AST, we specialize in rotary forging, a unique method featuring rotation, rolling, and axial compression and uses dies that aren’t parallel or flat. It allows us to produce reliable products.

Short lead times and cost-effective production are essential for professionals. That’s why rotary has increased in popularity over the last few decades. This closed die forging process produces a finished product with more accuracy, in less time and with less costs.

However, you may be wondering what makes it so different from other methods. A conventional open die process consists of two stationary, parallel, and flat dies. Rotary forging is a combination of rotation, rolling, and axial compression and uses dies that aren’t parallel or flat.
