🤠 Long before the theme parks, before the name Orlando, this place was a rough cattle settlement in the palmetto scrub that most people have never heard called by its first name: Jernigan.

In the late 1830s the Army built Fort Gatlin south of a chain of lakes during the Second Seminole War. When settlers trickled in afterward, they gathered near a cabin owned by cattleman Aaron Jernigan, and the little community took his name. It was cracker cowboy country then, all open range, scrub cattle and long braided whips, a hard place far from anywhere. In 1857 the growing town traded that name for a new one, Orlando, and the legends about where that name came from have been argued over ever since.

From a lonely frontier fort to a cow town to the most visited tourist city on earth, few places have transformed so completely. The next time someone pictures Orlando as nothing but roller coasters, you can tell them about the whips and the longhorns and a settler named Jernigan who got there first. 🐂
