Starting to brighten up and dry out. Spending this Sunday listening to the flowing waters of the Miller’s River get getting some elevations and locations. Had some earlier help last week from my daughter with a short elevation transfer. Enjoying the time outdoors before the snow sets in.

Couple of long days in the western part of the state before the snow arrives tomorrow. Enjoyed the warm temperatures and clear skies, and the great scenery in that part of the state, including sunsets/sunrises and moonsets/moonrises. (Also some old houses, a town line bound, and the striations of sand in a gravel pit. Lots to see!

Quiet, windy and sunny day performing a property survey on a camp lot on the lake. Have been fairly successful in finding lot corners. Just a couple missing and one laying flat just under the grass. Enjoying the days before snow covers the ground, making it a little more difficult to find survey control.

Sometimes you never know what might have been set to mark a property corner. This 8” long wrench was a first find for me. It’s location seems to good to have been buried there on accident. Replaced with 30” long iron rod.

This is what surveyors are hunting for when using a metal detector and digging in the ground. Thankfully this pipe wasn’t too deep. Believe the pipe to be circa 1910(ish) based on recorded plan. Now to go hunt for more.

Always nice to see old numbered stone street bounds still exist in town. Monuments are becoming more rare, which in turn adds to the difficulties of a survey and hence an increased cost to the clients. Saving survey monuments benefits the whole community, now and long into the future.

I sometimes hear/read how solar development destroys the environment and animal habitat. This is not always the case, and one can lists pros & cons for most any development. Sometimes these fields provide a new habitat for more diversity in wildlife.

While laying out portions of another site in the southern Berkshires that was a former gravel operations pit, we had some visitors watching and grazing on the hillside. In the last month, new grass has started growing in what was previously mostly sand. When this project is done, the site will have a combination of sand and a few acres of new grassy landscape. I have also been on some solar sites, where birds have found new areas to nest in/underneath the solar array, without causing harm to the solar production.

As with most things, development also needs to find a balance.

This site was a former gravel pit and concrete production site for many years in the mid to later 1900's. (Feels odd saying that.) After a few years of being grown over, portions of the site have been cleaned, cleared and regraded in preparation for approximately 8 acres of solar panels. Thankfully I have a good vantage point to perform much of the staking for the site layout.

It has been interesting seeing how the site has changed over the past few months by a skilled group of contractors, and will be exciting to see the development over the next few months.

If you're wondering what a surveyor's role is in a development like this, I first visited this almost 2 years ago at the beginning of planning, and last year spent around a week performing a perimeter survey of the entire 30 acre property to create an accurate plan of the perimeter to be used for design. (I did not perform the topographic survey for this site.) Over the past few months, I marked out the limit of clearing, erosion control placement, set stakes for the detention basins, roadway, and general site grading. Over the next couple of weeks and months, I'll be setting more stakes for the electrical trenches and equipment, utility poles, perimeter fence, and equipment and structural posts for the solar panels. When all is done, I may be asked to perform an as-built survey of the site as well.

There’s a little bit of Archaeology in Surveying. This corner monument, being an iron pin in a granite stone, required some digging below the edge of the blacktop road. In the dirt above the stone, were remnants of wood, possibly from an old fence or other structure. For this survey, the client purchased some additional land from the neighbor to widen their driveway. If this monument survives the new driveway construction, it’s very likely it will not see daylight for very many years, its existence recorded only by this photo and the survey plan.
