Hotspots persist in Queens office building fire

Fire tears through office building in Jackson Heights

JACKSON HEIGHTS (WABC) -- Firefighters remain on the scene of a five-alarm fire that gutted an office building in Queens Monday night.

About 200 firefighters battled the blaze for almost six hours before bringing it under control just before midnight. Hot spots persisted through early Tuesday, and two tower ladders were dousing the building with water.

Fire officials say the blaze began around 5:45 p.m. on the third floor of the 4-story building on 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights. Responders were on scene in four minutes, but flames were already shooting out the window and the fire was spreading quickly because of the wind.

The third and fourth floors are a total loss, while the first and second have extensive water damage.

Plaza College, a four-year accredited college, is located in the building. Officials posted a note on the school page saying everyone was evacuated safely and that there will be no service at the school tomorrow.

Numerous ground-floor businesses, including two restaurants, a pharmacy and a jewelry store, were damaged.

A fire department spokesman says a child who lived in a nearby building was taken to a hospital to be evaluated, and a firefighter suffered a minor injury.

A police officer who was at the scene also suffered minor smoke inhalation.

The Red Cross is assisting 12 residents from a building across the street that had to be evacuated due to carbon monoxide levels.

There is no word on what caused the fire.

Mold problems??? Call Emergency Fire Services at 718.326.2909 NO COST out of your pockets. We bill directly to your insurance company.

Mold becomes a problem inside a home or business when there's excessive humidity or moisture for an extended period of time. The problem can originate from sudden water releases, like a burst pipe or large spill that goes untreated, or from a chronic condition, such as a leaking roof or plumbing. Even high humidity or warm, moist air condensing on cool surfaces can trigger mold problems. It's always best to have the mold evaluated and removed by a certified professional.

Mold can grow almost anywhere in a home or business if conditions permit. If there is visible growth on painted wall surfaces, property owners should be concerned about what may be growing on the wall's opposite side. The environment inside the walls of a house often differs drastically from the outside and could create a perfect haven for mold. If the wall remains wet for a prolonged period, it's almost guaranteed that the mold growth on the back side will be worse than on the front. At that point, containing the work space and removing moldy materials, followed by cleaning of salvageable framing, are the best options.

Certified professionals have the training and experience to:

Identify moisture sources
Evaluate mold growth (visible or suspected)
Contain damage to the smallest area possible
Physically remove contamination
Dry materials to ensure that mold will not return
Perform or recommend procedures for returning property to a pre-loss condition

Dealing with Flood Damage Repair and Cleanup
by Matt Goering

Perhaps the biggest nightmare any homeowner can experience is a flood, be it the result of natural disaster or plumbing failure. If you have been the unfortunate victim of flood damage, there are a number of procedures and processes you should follow on your way to undertaking flood damage repair. If you are in the middle of an emergency flood cleanup, here's a short list of guidelines to follow to get your home back up and running as soon as possible.

Safety is Your Top Priority
Any time your home experiences significant flood damage, the first step you should take is to evaluate your home for safety issues before you re-enter. Call in a professional assessor to evaluate the extent of the damage your home has incurred. This means checking the home for structural damage, making sure there are no electrical issues (remember water and electricity don't mix!), and getting an initial idea of the severity of other damage and potential health concerns you may have to deal with during the process of performing flood damage repair on your home. Once you've got the green light that all major safety concerns have been addressed, it's time to move in and start your emergency flood cleanup.

Document Everything
Upon re-entering your home, the first thing you should do is document all flood damage for insurance reasons. Take pictures of the flooded areas of your home, of any damaged furniture and belongings, and make certain to hang on to any paperwork from the assessor and repair bills you incur along the way. Being fairly compensated for a flood can be tricky business. The more documentation you have of the damage, the better things will turn out for you.

Emergency Flood Cleanup
Once you've carefully documented all the damage, the dirty work begins. You need to get your home dry and cleaned up as quickly as possible to avoid further damage, as well as to prevent the development of mold and fungus, which can lead to health problems and larger remediation projects. Pump out any remaining standing water, set up de-humidifiers, and get as many fans running as soon as possible. Hiring a flood damage repair specialist for your emergency flood cleanup is an excellent investment if they are available. They have equipment and knowledge that you don't have access to, all of which will get your home dried out in the shortest amount of time possible.

Begin Your Flood Damage Repair
Once your home has been dried out and cleaned up, it's time to start the flood damage repair process. Depending on the extent and cause of your flood, this can be a substantial undertaking. If your home has suffered structural damage, you may be talking about major construction. You might even need to seek out an alternate residence until your home can be restored to its original state. Even if the damage was fairly light, however, you're still talking about the replacement of flooring, drywall, and any furniture and other possessions that were destroyed in the flood.

If you've experienced a serious flood in your home, your best bet is to talk to a contractor experienced in dealing with flood damage, restoration, and repairs. Doing so is the only sure-fire way to get your home back to where it started. Furthermore, hiring one of these companies early on will save you the trouble of finding multiple contractors along the way to restore your home since they are an all-in-one service. A good flood restoration company has the resources and know-how to guide your flood damage repair project through from beginning to end.

Fire and Water Damage Restoration
by Marcus Pickett

Home Maintenance
With a heart attack, time is muscle. With fire and water damage, time is home. The more time you lose, the more of your house you will lose. Fire and water damage restoration is a process that must be undertaken immediately to salvage what can be salvaged. And because battling fire requires dousing the flames with water, often you're forced to address both issues at the same time. Rightfully so, firefighters aren't concerned with hardwood flooring or upholstered furniture when fighting a house fire. If your home has suffered fire or water damage, here are a few steps to take so you can get your home back into shape as soon as possible.

Safety First
Both fire and water can cause significant structural damage to your home. Be sure to look for structural damage to walls, roofs, stairs, ceilings, and floors before you re-enter your home, much less begin to assess personal property loss. It's just not worth it. Beware that water damage is often less obvious than fire damage, so be especially careful when re-entering your home. Damage to electrical wiring is another huge concern and, in the case of a natural disaster, even the water coming out of your tap may be contaminated. In all cases, it's best to play it safe and hire a fire and water damage restoration company to assess and approve the structural integrity of your home before you return.

Fire Damage Restoration
Anytime your home suffers a fire of any magnitude, you're in for a big cleanup. The areas directly affected will most likely have to be remodeled and restored to ensure their structural stability. Beyond that, smoke and fire residue present health risks (mostly respiratory), and the smell of a fire can be almost impossible to get rid of. In all cases, clean everything thoroughly to begin with. Use a HEPA vacuum to ensure you capture all small particulates of soot, debris and fire extinguisher residue. After that, be sure to remove all other larger debris from your home. Ventilation is also an important step. Open all windows, and use fans to ventilate the affected rooms to help get rid of the smell. Be sure to clean first, however, as using fans around dust, soot and other fine dusts can cause respiratory distress. Finally, call in a fire and water damage restoration company to do the real dirty work. They have equipment and procedures at the ready that no average homeowner has access to.

Fire and Water Recovery Services
Water Damage Restoration
With water damage, the primary concern is drying out your home as soon as possible. Once you've had the structural integrity of your home assessed and approved, do whatever you can to get the moisture out. Vacuum out any standing water with all-purpose vacuums, set up dehumidifiers in the affected rooms, and set up as many fans as possible to speed up the drying out process. Failure to do so can lead to mold, fungus, and mildew problems, all of which will require a major mold remediation project to eliminate the problem. If your home has incurred substantial water damage, be sure to hire a fire and water damage restoration company to come in and tackle the job. Just as with fire damage, the professional have commercial-grade solutions at their disposal, including freezer, cryogenic, vacuum freeze, and vacuum thermal drying techniques to get things back to normal as soon as possible.

Insurance Companies and Water and Fire Damage Restoration
Most homeowners have homeowners' insurance that covers most water and fire damage. Yet, as most people know and too many have experienced, you're better off believing a poker player than a claims adjuster. It's never a bad idea to hire a water and fire damage restoration company to complete an independent assessment and cost estimate. Hopefully, you won't need it, but if legal action becomes necessary, it's a handy document to have in your corner. Alternately, you may find your independent cost assessment comes in underneath the insurance company's. Or, you may find you don't want to return your home to its original condition, lopping off a damaged section or using the disaster as an excuse to complete a home addition. Again, there is no downside in talking to a water and fire damage restoration company, just don't wait until it's too late!

Have A Professional Handle The Process Of Fire Restoration

The process of fire restoration can be very involved. Private homeowners and companies can oftentimes be devastated by the damage caused by this kind of event. One aspect that gives peace of mind involves knowing when the right professional has been hired. That is one of the reasons why it is important to hire a firm that is associated with the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification.

Homeowners and business owners may be in shock from the initial devastation. It is important to try and follow the proper steps to achieve a complete fire restoration. Service providers that are associated with the Institute will have the following distinctions: current training, safety and health certifications, vast amounts of experience in restoration projects and the proper licenses and insurance information. Customers should also check all references and obtain price quotes prior to hiring anyone. Any contracts that are presented should be reviewed closely.

The first step in the process is to clean up as much of the existing area as possible. If the area is not immediately cleaned, soot residue and permanent damage can be left behind. If the homeowner or business owner does the initial cleaning, it is important to follow these steps. When cleaning, always use dust masks and open the area for proper ventilation. Clean from the ceilings to the floors and vacuum all floors and upholstery. Wash any items that are able to be laundered. Clean the outside with a pressure washer if available.

If immediate clean up is not done, it can lead to devastating effects. Within minutes of fire and smoke damage, appliances and many items will discolor to a yellow hue. After a few hours, acid will stain bathrooms and many other areas of the home or business. Within days, walls will discolor permanently and items will begin to rust due to the acid residue. Finally, after weeks the cost of clean-up will become substantially more expensive. The building and furnishings can be permanently damaged by the acid left behind. Soot residue will be layered throughout the home or business. For these reasons, it is vital to contact a professional associated with the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification to utilize fire restoration techniques in an effort to return the home or business to a pre-loss state. One company or service provider should be able to handle the damage. The seal of Certification by the Institute should be shown on any provider’s website. This shows the customer the reliability and the expertise of the service provider.

Residue and smoky odors need to be removed immediately. Professionals will use the process of fire restoration to achieve satisfactory results. These providers will remove the source of the odor, clean any items that can be salvaged, get rid of any lingering odor with an odor counteractant and deodorizing fog. Finally, the provider will seal salvageable items to encapsulate odor and prevent further recontamination.

Homeowners and businesses that are educated in the fire restoration process are able to minimize the cost of repair. Professionals can be contacted in a timely manner to return the area to a pre-loss state. By hiring the right professionals the victims can have some peace of mind during a very stressful time.
