Over a span of four days, Nesbit Fire department has responded to four large brush fires. All of these fires started as controlled burns that spread out of control.

Both of our brush trucks - Squad 7 and Squad 17, responded to all of the fires. Tanker 7 also responded to a fire last night to provide water.

So far this March, Nesbit Fire Department has responded to two vehicle fires in our community:

- The first began as a controlled burn that quickly spread out of control and burned the land owner’s off road vehicle. Engine 17 and Squad 7 responded to extinguish these fires.

- The second was an Amazon delivery truck that caught fire while on its delivery route. Engine 17 responded and received assistance from Desoto County Rescue 51.

While some fires are unavoidable, others, such as those that result from outdoor burning, can be prevented. Always call to obtain a burn permit and monitor outdoor burning closely.

How can you obtain a burn permit? Burn permits are free to obtain and will be issued over the phone on a daily basis by calling (662) 469-8080

Last night at approximately 10:00pm Nesbit Fire Department responded for report of a kitchen fire in Nesbit. The homeowner was home at the time of the fire and was alerted by working smoke detectors and a monitored fire alarm system. The cause of the fire was determined to be cooking materials on the stove.

Engine 17 and engine 7 responded from Nesbit. NFD received mutual aid from Hernando engine 2 and Bridgetown engine 3.

This weekend, many of Nesbit’s firefighters came together for a live fire training event. Our crews worked through multiple training evolutions focused on fire attack and search and rescue operations. Nesbit Fire Department places an emphasis on continued training, and live fire training is one of the many tools that we use. Live fire training allows our firefighters to practice in realistic conditions, helping to ensure they stay prepared and confident in real life emergencies🔥🚒

What is a push-in ceremony, and why do we do it?
The tradition dates back to the early days of the fire service when fire pumps were pulled by horses. After returning from a call, firefighters would unhitch the horses and then manually push the fire pump back into the station.
With the arrival of motorized fire apparatuses, pushing the truck into the station was no longer necessary. However, firefighters continue to honor this tradition today by ceremonially pushing new apparatus into the station when they are placed into service. We are proud to continue this tradition by pushing in Engine 7 into the station.

We are proud to announce that Nesbit’s new engine 7 is now officially in service at station 7.

Putting this apparatus in service was truly a team effort, with over 20 of our firefighters showing up to load 2,000 feet of hose and all of our other equipment onto engine 7.

Upon completion, we held a traditional “push in” ceremony to commemorate the occasion.

Engine 7 is a 2025 Spartan fire engine custom built for NFD. Engine 7 is equipped with a 1,250 gallon water tank, a 6 man cab, 2,000 feet of various fire hose, and plenty of storage space for all of our fire and rescue equipment.

Nesbit Fire Department is excited to announce the arrival of our new fire engine. Engine 7 is a 2025 Spartan engine, custom built for Nesbit Fire Department. With a 6 man cab and a 1,250 gallon water tank, we are confident this new engine will be a great asset to our community for many years to come.

Engine 7 is replacing engine 17, our 2007 American LaFrance fire engine. In order to keep apparatus numbers in line with their stations, our new engine will be engine 7 and located at station 7. Our current engine 7 will be renumbered as engine 17 and located at station 17.

After training and moving equipment to the new engine we anticipate putting this engine in service around the beginning of January.

Congratulations Captain James

Congratulations Captain James

Congratulations to Capt. Mitchell James from the Nesbit Fire Department! But let’s not forget the true winners: YOU! It was fantastic to see so many impressive mustaches while raising awareness for men’s health! Fun fact: Did you know that mustaches have been around for over 5,000 years? Ancient warriors believed they provided strength and power! FIREHOUSE MOUSTACHE WAX
