"ASSE compliant" and "ASSE certified" backflow enclosures are not the same thing.
Compliant is a manufacturer's self-assessment.
Certified means the enclosure was tested in an accredited laboratory across six distinct performance requirements:
1. Freeze protection
2. Structural strength
3. Drainage capacity
4. Maintenance access
5. Security
6. Materials
Another way to think about it: Compliant is self-declared. Certified is proven. Uncertified enclosures risk inadequate R-value, may have poor drainage, or heaters not rated for wet environments.
So what does ASSE certified actually mean for backflow enclosures? ASSE certified means third-party verified performance.
