"ASSE compliant" and "ASSE certified" backflow enclosures are not the same thing.

Compliant is a manufacturer's self-assessment.

Certified means the enclosure was tested in an accredited laboratory across six distinct performance requirements:

1. Freeze protection
2. Structural strength
3. Drainage capacity
4. Maintenance access
5. Security
6. Materials

Another way to think about it: Compliant is self-declared. Certified is proven. Uncertified enclosures risk inadequate R-value, may have poor drainage, or heaters not rated for wet environments.

So what does ASSE certified actually mean for backflow enclosures? ASSE certified means third-party verified performance.

The primary reason is weather protection. When pump equipment is moved outdoors, it becomes exposed to changing weather conditions like rain, sun, wind and freezing winter temperatures, as well as vandalism.

When the pump system is installed outside, a properly designed cover helps:

โ€ข Protect critical pump components from environmental elements
โ€ข Extend equipment life by reducing exposure to corrosion and moisture
โ€ข Maintain system performance
โ€ข Provide noise reduction for nearby buildings or public areas

In many cases, moving a pump system outside also frees up valuable indoor space. But once installed above ground, the system must be protected with a durable, corrosion resistant enclosure that can handle long-term exposure.

Most โ€œenclosuresโ€ donโ€™t actually protect your equipment.

They hide it. They check a box...

But when temperatures drop, floods happen or maintenance is needed, thatโ€™s when the gaps show.

Real protection means:

โ€ข Engineered climate control, not guesswork
โ€ข Safe, easy access for testing and maintenance
โ€ข Drainage and durability built for real-world conditions
โ€ข Compliance with standards like ASSE 1060

Because when critical infrastructure fails, itโ€™s not just equipment at risk. Itโ€™s water systems, property and people.

If you've ever watched a reduced pressure zone backflow preventer open its relief valve and start dumping water, your first instinct was probably to assume something failed.

It's a reasonable assumption: water is flowing out of a valve that's supposed to stop water from going in the wrong direction. That looks like a failure!

It isn't.

Understanding the difference between what an RPZ is designed to do and what actually constitutes a problem is one of the most important things a design engineer, facility manager or water authority can know โ€” because it changes how you respond, how you specify, and how you protect the installation around the valve.

Here's what to look for:

Hinged access panels improve safety, access and ASSE 1060 compliance for backflow enclosures. Learn when and how to specify them.
