1905 Blacksmith Post Vice Restoration!

My bench vice had been giving me trouble for a while so I picked up this old post vice from a local welder. It was in definite need of some work so I straightened the leg and handle, wire wheeled all of the parts, heated and coated in boiled linseed oil, made some wedges for the mounting shackle (they were missing), cleaned out the 120 year old grease that was coming out in black chunks, re-greased, and finally forged a new spring out of a car leaf spring. I love restoring these old blacksmith tools and seeing new life come back in to them.

I had a commission from a coin collector for a custom scoop/spoon that would hold a 2025 penny for a Christmas gift. It was a pleasure dealing with Dan throughout the design process and the recipient was very pleased with the outcome. I love being able to utilize creativity and have freedom to design things for people, it is very fulfilling.

Finished up a decent sized order for some split cross pendants this morning. The customer wanted a mix of my “battle worn” finish with the wood grain and this was the result! I also sent a few out to another customer this morning. This one gives me “Old Rugged Cross” vibes, so that’s what I will call this finish.
I am grateful for the treadle hammer with all of the chiseling required for these. I utilize two different types of chisels and each cross was forged from a single piece of 3/8” square steel stock.

I finished up this beautiful, live edge cedar coat rack with hand forged hooks for a customer yesterday. It was rainy so I wasn’t able to get a picture outside with better lighting. If you would like one of your own just shoot me a message. ($70)

Ok, this is what I have still available from after the craft show! To help with perspective I included a picture of the material I make all of the scoops out of and the leaf keychains. (3/8” square steel stock and 14 gauge copper.) These scoops will last for generations if properly cared for. I also included a picture of all the colors of marbles I have available for custom orders. Have any other requests? Just ask!
- Feather hook rack: $145 (16” long hooks 4” from the top to bottom) TAKING ORDERS
- Cedar j-hook key rack: $40 (12 1/2” long)

I finished up this live edge cedar coat rack with hand forged j-hooks to match its little brother key rack the evening before the craft show last week! These two particular racks did end up selling, but I can make more upon request. $70 for the coat rack and $40 for the key rack. $100 for the set (The coat racks will be 26”-27” long. Coat rack j-hooks are made from 3/8” round steel, key rack j-hooks 1/4” round steel)

Tried out a new coffee scoop handle design featuring a split heart top and water twist handle section. Following that I forged up another basket twist handle encapsulating a blue marble this time. On Friday, one of the projects was a bundle of heavier duty j-hooks forged from 3/8” steel, pre-drilled, and ready to mount to a wall or plank. I will be attaching 5 to a plank of live edge cedar later this week for a coat rack to match the smaller key racks I made.

Made a couple of live edge cedar key racks with hand forged hooks for the upcoming bomber craft fest. I will be forging up more feather hooks to attach to another piece of live edge cedar and some larger feather hooks and leaf hooks for coat racks on both live edge cedar and live edge black walnut. I also included a sneak peak at a live edge black walnut charcuterie board with hand forged handles that is in the works!
