Deep breath...and go.

For years I held onto an unfocused, and unrealistic dream: to make soap, sell soap, and support myself (at least partially) in the process. But other jobs, and other passions, took priority. After all, I like to eat. So do my cats. As a single woman with little savings, starting a small business seemed the height of irresponsibility. And I was determined to be responsible; I gave up acting, took full-time office work, bought a condo, started a retirement plan...very grown up stuff.

After three years, my anxiety was off the charts. I was as unhealthy as I’ve ever been, and unhappy almost every day. I couldn’t understand what was wrong with me. But something had to change. So I took the leap. I quit my job, and started making soap again after years away from the craft. This should have added to my anxiety (now I’m a single woman with a mortgage, two elderly cats to support...and I’m unemployed), but instead my health started to improve immediately.

So I dove into business plans, and dusted off my old equipment. I researched ingredients and experimented with new recipes. And several months later, the business is a reality. I’ve named my company “Abbondanza” (Italian for abundance) in honor of my hard-working Sicilian ancestors, who lived full and joyous lives in quiet and understated ways. They made simplicity beautiful. I plan to do the same.

My soap is olive oil based, made in small-batches with only natural ingredients. No fragrance oils here! All scents are from essential oils. Yup. They will actually smell like the plants they’re named for. I use organic and/or local ingredients whenever possible, and all products are vegetarian or vegan. Also, no palm oil goes into ANY of my products. Abbondanza products are nourishing, hard-working, and environmentally responsible.
