A shipbuilding facility in Mobile, Alabama is expanding with a new bay that will eventually support production of submarine components for the U.S. Navy.

To support that work, eight overhead cranes needed to be lifted and set inside the new bay. Each crane weighs 226,000 pounds and spans 140 feet.

See how the project begins in part one.

At two Virginia nuclear plants, our team removed and replaced eight vertical feedwater heaters. The largest units weighed 157,000 lbs. and measured 41 ft. long.

Instead of modifying the plant’s overhead cranes or surrounding structure, which would have added significant cost and schedule impact, Barnhart designed and fabricated a custom temporary lifting device equipped with two 50-ton air tuggers. Set 48 ft. above the turbine deck, the system allowed the heaters to be lifted, carried across the deck, rotated, lowered to SPMTs, and hauled to staging.

In a stringent nuclear environment, the right plan makes the difference.

A safe worker is a healthy worker, inside & out💚

This week's focus is holistic worker health, and it is an important reminder for all of us.

Our teams work hard in demanding environments. That kind of work takes focus, preparation, and care for the whole person. Recovery, mental health, and rest are part of staying safe and ready for the work ahead.

If you're a Barnhart team member reading this: thank you for what you do. Your health matters to us, and so do the people waiting for you at home. ❤️

Barnhart recently completed a complex lift using our 𝗠𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗠𝗼𝗰𝗰𝘀® to install three major components beneath a steel structure that was never designed for vertical lifting loads.

The project required weeks of engineering, planning, and coordination to manage tight clearances, strict deflection limits, and load stability throughout the work. One component weighed 110,000 pounds, was elevated 30 feet in the air, and was set with less than one foot of clearance.

From gantry staging and custom catch plates to slide track and adjustable saddles, this project showed how Barnhart engineers solutions for lifting challenges that demand more than standard equipment.

Great job to all teams involved!
