Last week the team headed down to Prime Sod for the Texas Sports Turf Managers Association Field Day. It was a wet day, but we still managed to cut some nice-looking big rolls and spend some time with customers and industry pros from across Texas.

That's a Magnum A-Series Installer prepping the World Cup pitch at Hard Rock Stadium. A lot of big rolls and a whole lot of work from the crews who made it happen.

It's so pretty, it looks fake - but this is hybrid turf, natural grass grown on plastic as a base to protect athletes from injuries, with synthetic turf sewn in for durability and longevity.

One of our favorite things to do when we visit a farm is to check out how many hours they have on their Magnum equipment. This installer from out west has installed quite a few big rolls. Seeing hour meters like this makes us even more proud of the equipment that we build.

That's a lot of big rolls installed - that's a lot of business for a farm. This is a huge part of our "why."

We're sure there are a couple of our original model installers still rolling around with some good-looking hour meters. Does anybody know who might have the record?

Power is back on! Thank you all for the well wishes, we were very fortunate and thankful to not have sustained more damage. We will be back to building equipment and shipping out your orders tomorrow.

Please keep the rest of Hillsdale in your thoughts as families begin the process of rebuilding from the damage.

Hello all,

This is not the update we like to put out, but a tornado came through Hillsdale, Kansas last night. Our team is home safe, and we came through with minimal damage, but power is out in the entire town. Search and rescue is still out there, so we are closed for the day.

Our local phone lines are also down in the area, so if you need to reach us, please use (800) 330-0857.

There have been only minor injuries reported, but a number of families in our community have lost their homes overnight. Please keep Hillsdale in your thoughts today - especially those who are displaced, and the search and rescue teams that are still out there.

We hope to reopen towards the end of the week, but we will keep you updated as we learn more.

Sod Stories | Episode 1: Helt's Turf Farms

For our first stop, we didn’t have to go very far.

About 45 minutes down the road from Louisburg, Kansas, we visited our friends at Helts Turf Farms in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and spent the day with Shawn Helt.

Helt's Turf Farms (Helt's Turf Farms)was one of the early adopters of big roll sod, purchasing one of the first Big Roll machines our founder, Gary Dover, ever built.

If you’ve met Shawn before, you know he has a gift for telling stories. It didn’t take long before we were talking about how the farm has grown over the years and what it takes to keep things moving forward. Also worth noting: Shawn is always looking for old historic turf harvesting equipment, so if you’ve got something sitting around, he’s probably your guy.

Shawn represents the third generation of turf farming in his family, and his son is already representing the fourth.

We spent the day walking the farm, catching up with one of their install crews toward the end of the afternoon, and even had the chance to spend some time with their harvest manager, Bob Mayhugh.

Bob has been harvesting sod for longer than most people in this industry have been around. If you know someone who’s been doing it longer, we’d love to meet them.

We’re grateful to Shawn and the team at Helt's Turf Farms for taking the time to share their story with us.
