NYC Indie Rock Festival

NYC Indie Rock Festival The premier indie rock festival in NYC since 2007. Our festival features the best and most innovative indie rock acts in NYC.

This all started on a roof top in Greenpoint, Brooklyn near McCarron park back in 2007. A few friends who couldn't piece together enough cash to get into a music festival being held at the McCarron pool decided that they would hold their own concert on their roof. So they pieced together a PA from the equipment that they had, invited a few bands they know, and bought a keg. And that end of summer

jam session gradually grew over time. The event really took off a few years later when Jeff Mangum stopped by and blew everyone away by playing a few songs. Over the years the NYC Indie Rock Festival has developed into the premier indie rock festival in NYC. We've proudly featured the best and most innovative indie rock acts in NYC. For our 10th anniversary, we're moving the event from the rooftops of Brooklyn into Manhattan at the Bowery Electric. The Festival will take place on Friday September 8, 2017. This song was written after I'd spent the previous night listening to the back half of Louder than Bombs by the Smiths. The song is very clearly about about love - but the singer can't quite shake feelings of self-doubt.

I love the way drummer Rodney Howard was able to blend two very different vibes as between the verse and chorus.

We're getting into some deep cuts from the album - "The Underground Music Show". But if I'm being honest, it's the deep cuts rather than the "singles" that reveal an album's soul.

I've always been more of a "William it's really nothing" kind of a guy....

Here's a new song from the upcoming Chapell album. It might the most honest song I've ever written. When I was out touring with Gin Blossoms, this song went over really well - even though the audience had never heard it before. Anyway, I hope you give it a listen. It's called GROW OLD WITH ME.

When I play this song out live, I usually start with a story about an older hippie dressed in a tutu. (hence the pic). Come see me live someday to hear the story. 🥠

At first glance, there’s nothing especially trendy about Alan Chapell. He’s a lawyer, for heaven’s sake. Dig a little deeper, and you uncover a complex, driven guy who’s found his version of the perfect work-life balance. On the one hand, Chapell’s impeccably crafted forays into indie rock...

A very cool review of SUDDENLY by EARMILK.

- "Suddenly" feels like an old friend while offering something entirely new and thought-provoking. -

Chapell's latest single, "Suddenly," seamlessly combines the nostalgic elements of 80s and 90s music with the introspective lyricism of the 70s. Alan

A great writeup of "Suddenly" by Big Takeover Magazine. My fav clip:

“Suddenly” does that great thing of making universal and relatable points through small stories and personal philosophies rather than trying to be big and clever. Small and clever, finessed and deftly done works for me every time"

As a music community, we are meant to look to the future, write the next chapter, and see where things go next. But sometimes it pays to take influence in the past; after all, things move quickly in the arts, so finding inspiration in the music of the eighties and nineties, as Chapell seems to, can....

Getting some nice press so far for Chapell's single SUDDENLY and am hearing there's more on the way. Here's a few:

Stamford, CT-raised singer/songwriter, Chapell is preparing to release his new album, The Underground Music Show on July 19th. The first single from the album is “Suddenly.” The track perfectly encapsulates Chapell’s self-described “Indie Rock meets Americana” style with its catchy chorus ...

I just released "Suddenly" - a song about a group of digital media nerds who had gotten together to honor our friend Tim who had passed.

As fate would have it, I lost another friend recently. This friend played a huge part the musical side of life. My friend "ET" was a recording engineer. And the most fu***ng rock-and-roll person I've ever met. ET and I spent several years working closely together on my first album. This past Sunday, a bunch of us headed to LA to celebrate ET's life. And while it was certainly bittersweet - it was also filled with touching moments that I'll remember forever.

ET was a guitar player, band leader, recording engineer and producer whose career spanned over 60 years. You may not know his name (even if I shared it here) but his influence on the music world was immense. He made music with some of the most talented and well known rock artists - and many of them were in attendance this Sunday. I was honored to be included.

But. it's. not. about. that.

A bunch of us stepped up to share a story or two about how ET had touched our lives. Some of the stories were really funny. Most were touching. But what really hit me is that I had heard most of those stories before. When we worked together, ET loved talking about the people he's worked with. He was the type of person who revelled in the successes of the people he loved. His wife. His sons. And just about everyone he ever worked with. In fact, I can't remember him saying a negative word about ANYONE ever. ET saw good in everyone.

Anyway, I spent this past Sunday honoring and reminiscing about an old friend. And I left LA feeling a huge sense of connection to a group of people - many of whom I'd never met before. I'll miss him.

Just last week, I noted that writing a song (Suddenly) about a Zoom memorial might be perceived as strange. But after this weekend, I'm more convinced than ever that there's something to all this. If anything, we need even more songs about connectivity and love. RIP ET!

New Music - please listen! I just released
"SUDDENLY"; the first single to my seventh album. I wrote it in memory of my friend and legendary digital agency hero Tim McHale.

This might be the first indie pop song written about a Zoom memorial service. I'll admit, it's kind of a weird topic for a pop song. But please hear me out.

Tim passed away in 2020 during the early part of lockdown. Getting everyone together in a room to honor his memory just wasn't on the table. So a group of friends organized a memorial service for Tim via Zoom. Something like 500 people attended - which wasn't surprising. And it also wasn't surprising that many, many of them wanted to say something in Tim's honor. What WAS surprising was how a common narrative thread emerged about the way Tim had touched our lives. The way that Tim had taken many of us under his wing. How Tim took many of us aside to share a bit of wisdom (sometimes helping to adjust the sales pitch of the very people who were selling to Tim at the ad agency). Life can feel thankless particularly when you're just starting your career. Having someone give a s**t when they don't have to is priceless.

After dozen of stories at Tim's memorial - I felt closer to that group of people than ever. We were connected together by the simple acts of kindness of a person who had been willing to take the time to have an impact on our lives. It was moving to say the least.

But it also made me think. I've been in the digital space since 1997. And even in death, Tim reminded all of us how important it is to be kind - to be generous with our time, and to be grateful to be part of this community.

So anyway, I wrote this song. It's def not what anyone would consider a traditional pop song. But every time I hear it, I think about how fortunate we all are. And how our time here is so short. RIP Tim.

Also, I want to thank my band: Ann Klein, Lorenza Ponce, Malcolm Gold, Rodney Howard, Bashiri Johnson, Tim Hatfield & Mauricio Cersosimo as well as photographer Matthew Cortellesi for all your love and support.
