I always thought the absolute worst part of a highway blowout was the semis blasting past your shoulder at eighty miles an hour. I was wrong.

The worst part is the taste of the valve stem.

When my right rear blew, I dug into my trunk and found that KALECOAUTO manual inflator. Beach-ball technology, the packaging claimed. Just lungs.

An hour later, I was on my hands and knees in the dirt, cheeks distended like a dizzy jazz trumpeter, blowing a terrifying, high-pitched FFFFFFF into thirty-five pounds of stubborn rubber. Every exhale felt like pushing a bowling ball through a cocktail straw. I tasted road grime, deep despair, and an alarming amount of brake dust.

I finally checked the pressure gauge. Sweet progress! I'd successfully inflated it to an impressive 0.4 PSI.

Then I coughed, inhaled sharply, and accidentally sucked all the stale air right back out.
