This skinning blade was forged from an ingot of pure iron flake and sorel metal. That was melted in a clay graphite crucible in a confusion process at a temperature of 2900° in my driveway. Calculated at 1% Carbon with very low alloying content. Essentially 0 manganese. Light etch in oxalic acid to bring out hamon and dendritic pattern that’s natural to crucible steel.

Some of may not know that Alaska is full of many active volcanoes. One is 75 miles across the inlet from Anchorage, Mt. Spurr. It is currently at an alert level orange from a single small explosive event last night. It has been monitored closely the last few months and looks like chances are high for another eruption. I watched its last eruption in 1992 and was fascinated.
