Part 2 of our 980C Rear Differential Rebuild

We’ve got it torn down, and now we can see the extent of the damage. The axle shaft is missing a full tooth, the ring gear has several badly chipped teeth, and we found additional flaking and chipping inside the differential.

Those components will all be replaced rather than going back into the build. We’re also installing new NTN cups and cones throughout, even though the originals held up surprisingly well considering the amount of damage.

Next up: putting this 980C differential back together.

We’ve got a 980C rear differential back in the shop, and there’s some obvious damage to dig into.

The ring gear has significant tooth damage, and the pinion shaft is missing almost a full tooth. It could be the result of a bearing failure, or hard shifts under a heavy load could have played a part.

We won’t know for sure until we get further into the teardown.

Fresh out of the rebuild shop: a 6G7530 differential bevel gear group for 631E & 637E scrapers.

This differential was rebuilt in-house by our team with NTN bearings throughout, new washers, and any additional components that needed replacement. It’s finished, inspected, and ready to be installed.

It’s only the beginning of the week, but we’ve already got our Failure of the Week.

This 621 transmission came into our rebuild shop for an R&R. After pulling the filter and metal screen, it was pretty clear we’ve got a major failure somewhere inside.

We’ll be tearing it down over the next few days to find out exactly what happened. Stay tuned for an update once we get inside.

Fresh out of the rebuild shop and getting a little sunshine 🌞

A rebuild is only as good as the prep that goes into it.

This 621 transmission came into the shop after a major failure sent metal and contamination throughout the system. Before any new parts go back in, the case has to be thoroughly cleaned to remove the oil, sludge, and contaminants left behind.

Whether it’s a transmission, torque converter, differential, or other component, the rule is the same: start clean before you rebuild.

A quality rebuild starts long before the fresh coat of paint.

Our rebuild team uses bead blasting to remove rust, old paint, and buildup from smaller components before they go back into an assembly. It’s one of the steps that helps us get components properly cleaned and prepped before the rebuild continues.

Introducing SHOP TALK

We’re taking you inside the ACTParts Rebuild Shop to share practical tips, real-world failures, and what our team has learned from years of working with heavy equipment components.

For our first Shop Talk, Matt walks through a 3306 long block that came into the shop with serious internal damage caused by an oil system issue.

The damage is a good reminder of why checking your oil system matters. A failing oil pump, blockage, or other lubrication issue can quickly lead to damaged bearings and journals, turning a preventable problem into an expensive repair and unnecessary downtime.

We’ll be sharing more from the rebuild shop, including what’s on the bench, common failures we see, rebuild tips, and the occasional “you’ve got to see this” from our team.
