Love books? Come learn how to make one with your own hands. 🎉

We are excited to begin our 2026 bookbinding workshop series . 📚 Our first topic is Medieval Flexible Binding – a beautiful and practical structure inspired by historical bindings. This style was widely used in conservation after the Florence flood in 1966, when thousands of damaged books needed strong, flexible binding. In this hands-on workshop, you will sew, assemble, and finish your own Medieval Flexible Binding to take home. 🥰

We would like to send a huge Mahalo to everyone who visited our booth at the Hawaiʻi Holiday Craft & Gift Fair last weekend. 🥰

Every time we participate in a fair, we meet so many people who love books, journals, stationery, writing, drawing – and cats! 🐈📚 Some were looking for something special for themselves, others for a loved one. Some visited us multiple times in a single day, and some stayed awhile to enjoy finding just the right piece.

We truly enjoyed every conversation, and we learned so much from you. Your stories and kindness gave us incredible energy to keep moving forward. 💪

During the fair, we also talked with many of you about the workshops planned for 2026. We are working on them now -- please stay tuned! 📚

Books often tell stories beyond their pages, and this one truly does! We recently received a book whose flyleaves, front and back, are completely filled with the names of its readers. Each person who read it left their mark—proof of its incredible journey. The wear and tear on this book are like a medal of honor, earned through countless hands turning its pages. 😍

䞀冊の本は本圓にたくさんの人に読たれおいきたす。今回私達のスタゞオにやっお来た本はそれを立掟に蚌明しおくれたした。本の前埌にある芋返しの遊びのペヌゞにはこの本を読んだ䞀人䞀人の名前ずメモがぎっしり詰たっおいたした。それだけ倚くの人に読たれた本なので、スタゞオにやっお来た時のダメヌゞ床は玍埗がいきたす。でもどこかこの本はこれだけのダメヌゞを誇っおいるようにも芋えたした。💝

ダメヌゞレベルはかなり高いものの、修埩の過皋は至っおシンプル。そしおその過皋での特効薬は『忍耐』で、私達のスタゞオでこの特効薬が切れるこずはありたせん。安心しおお任せください🀗

We’re thrilled to share that our Coptic Journals debuted on our website! 🎉This time, we’ve crafted with the natural beauty of lychee, mango, and koa wood, each with its own unique character.

The journey begins at where we sourced the wood. Then cut the wood down to size. As we sand each piece, the personality of the wood comes alive-mango offers a sweet fragrance and a soft, low sound, while lychee and koa bring an earthy scent and a sharper tone. Even in their raw form, they exude a quiet elegance, and as we treat them with tung oil from , their true beauty emerges. Lychee takes a bit longer to cure than mango, with Koa taking the longest, but each transforms into a stunning work of art. 🀗

コプティックゞャヌナルの新䜜がいよいよホヌムペヌゞに登堎 🎊 今回のお題はラむチ、マンゎ、そしおコア。毎回違った朚を䜿っおゞャヌナルを䜜っおいたすが、それぞれがナニヌクで、色ずか朚目、朚の密床だけでなく、オむルの染み具合や也く時間もそれぞれ違うんですよ。

朚たちは倧地に立っおいるずきは甘い果実を実らせるだけでなく、倧きく䌞ばした枝で朚陰を䜜っおくれたり雚宿りをさせおくれたりしたす。そしお様々な事情で切られた埌は、次のステヌゞに進んで私達を癒しおくれたす。私達の所に来た朚たちは矎しい本に生たれ倉わりたす。📙

今回の䜜業䞭、マンゎの朚からはほんのり甘酞っぱい銙りがしおきたした。ラむチの朚からは予想に反しおりッディな銙り、そしおコアは麝銙を思い出させる銙り。サンダヌで削る際の音たで違っおいお、マンゎの方がラむチやコアより䜎音()だったようなオむルを塗った時の染み具合や也く時間もマンゎが䞀番早く、ラむチ、コアず続きたす。

䜜業埌に手が震えお字が曞けなくおも、おが屑たみれになっおも、朚を盞手の仕事は楜しくおやさしい気分になれるんです。そしお最終的に出来䞊がったゞャヌナルたちはずおも魅力的でどれもゎヌゞャス、惚れ惚れしたす島から頂いた倧地の恵みに心から感謝、です。🙏

We’re excited to announce that our Koa Coptic Journals are finally ready! The process took a bit longer due to the weather, but patience is key in our studio. Each step, from curing treatments to pressing text blocks, is guided by the materials themselves—we simply follow their lead. 😅

This batch of Koa has some unique qualities. We’ve noticed slight variations in color based on where the wood grew, with darker shades coming from the Big Island and lighter tones from Oahu. You’ll see hints of this in the images. 🔍

We’ve also left some natural imperfections, like small bug holes, as part of the wood’s character. These marks tell the story of each piece and make every journal truly one of a kind.

ちょっず遅れおコアも出来䞊がりたした。お倩気の郜合で予定しおいたよりも時間がかかりたしたが、私達のマントラ『忍耐は矎埳』のごずく『忍』の䞀字で仕䞊げたした。物事には時間がかかる理由がちゃんずあるわけで、スタゞオ内の䜜業の䞭でも糊の也きを埅぀こず、仕䞊げの凊理が完治するのを埅぀こず、そしおテキストをプレスしお玙が萜ち着くのを埅぀こずは私達の郜合で䜜業を進めないこずになっおいたす。その郜床本ず察話しながら進めおいきたす。䞻圹はい぀も本なんです。😞

今回、ゞャヌナルによっおコアの色目が若干違うのに気づきたした。3, 5枚目参照家具工房のダグさんのお話では、育った堎所によっお色が違うずか。ハワむ島産のコアの方がオアフ産のものより色が濃い目に仕䞊がりたした。👍

たた、衚面に小さな虫穎がいく぀かありたすが、砎損の心配がなければこの虫穎は埋めないこずにしおいたす。私達のコプティック・ゞャヌナルは接着剀や化孊合成物を䜿わずに䜜られおいたす。この虫穎や小さな亀裂もそれぞれの朚が生きおきた足跡で、それが䞀冊䞀冊のゞャヌナルを「䞖界に䞀冊だけ」にしおいるわけです。コプティック・ゞャヌナルのこんなずころも気に入っおいただけるずうれしいです。

泚文しおいたものが予定通りに届かなくおも自然に悪たれ口が、䜜業䞭に突然機材の調子が悪くなっおも時に泣きたす、倩気の郜合で蚈画通りに䜜業が進たなくおも愚痎のオンパレヌド䜜品を䜜り続けるこずができるのは、私達を応揎しおくださる方がいるからです。この堎をお借りしお心から感謝の気持ちをお送りしたいず思いたす。🙏💝

We recently had the pleasure of restoring 9 volumes of "Household Words" by Charles Dickens. These were originally published as weekly magazines in the 18th-19th century and were often sold unbound. Collectors would then take them to their favorite bookbinders, leading to the unique covers we see from that era. 📚

Interestingly, these unbound books were often shipped in wine or whisky barrels across the ocean. Wealthy collectors sometimes bought two sets: one for display with full leather binding and gold tooling, and one for reading, bound in cloth. ❀

Imagining the excitement of discovering new books through newspapers and letters, and the anticipation of waiting for them to arrive by postal service or picking them up in person, fills me with joy. It was a truly enjoyable experience working on these volumes. 🀗

私達のずころにずっおも叀い皀少本がやっおくるこずがありたす。今回は1850幎代に発行された9冊の本が修埩のために運ばれおきたした。

チャヌルズディケンズ監修の「Household Words」。圓時は週刊誌ずしお発行された雑誌を出版瀟がたずたった時期に䞀冊の本に補本し発行しおいたした。1819䞖玀頃は本も補本せずに印刷された段階で売られるこずもよくありたした。本の愛奜家たちはそれを買っお各々のお気に入りの装䞁家のずころに持ち蟌んで、圌らだけの䞀冊を求めおいたした。なので圓時はカバヌデザむンも本によっおいろいろだったんです。😊

本は印刷された埌、あちこちに送られおいきたした。船䟿で送られるずきはワむン暜やりむスキヌ暜に詰めお海を枡っお行きたした。裕犏な愛奜家たちは未装䞁の本を2冊分買い求め、冊は読曞甚に垃で装䞁するように泚文し、もう冊は本の装䞁家のずころぞ持っお行っお、自宅の本棚を食るために豪華な革装䞁を泚文したした。🚢

圓時はアマゟンもクロネコダマトも、もちろんむンタヌネットもない時代。本の愛奜家たちは新聞やダむレクトメヌルなどで新刊の案内を知り、ある人は郵䟿で受け取り、ラッキヌな人は歩いおたたは銬車でお店に盎接買いに行ったこずでしょう。お店で未装䞁の新刊を手にした人はその足で装䞁家の工房を蚪れ、早速カバヌデザむンの話に花が咲いたのかも知れたせん。

圓時の光景を思い浮かべるず、圌らが出来䞊がった䞀冊の本を手にしたずき、今よりもずっずりキりキ、ドキドキしおいたんじゃないかず、勝手に想像しおしたいたす。久しぶりに本が出版された圓時の様々なこずを空想しおワクワクさせおくれた9冊でした💕

Sneak Preview! 😍 Our Wooden Coptic Journals are almost ready to debut. This time, we're working with Lychee and Mango woods, sourced from our friends at . Visiting the lumberyard feels like being in a candy shop—so many beautiful local woods to choose from, it’s always a tough decision!

Once we made our choice, we took the wood to , where Doug helped us cut them down to journal size. Then came our favorite part: sanding! After working through six different grades of sandpaper, our hands and arms were exhausted—our right hand was shaking so much we could hardly write!😂

Next up is treating and finishing. We use Half & Half from , which is food grade and safe to use on our journals. Now comes the hard part: waiting
 patience is a virtue!

Our Coptic Journals are made entirely from natural materials: wood, paper, and linen thread—no glue or synthetic materials. When we work with these woods, we're reminded of the incredible beauty of nature. The smooth surface, the rich scent, and the feel of the wood are indescribable. Each journal carries a warm message from Mother Nature herself!
They're in the curing stage now, and we can’t wait to introduce them to you! Stay tuned!❀

ちょっず耳寄りなお話Kuro’s Workshopりッドゞャヌナルの新䜜がもうすぐ登堎したす。今回はラむチずマンゎの朚を䜿いたした。カむルアのお隣のワむマナロにある材朚店にお邪魔しお芋぀けたした。材朚店は私達にずっおケヌキ屋さんず同じで、どの朚を芋おもおいしそう(!) なかなか決められなくお困っおしたいたす。

お店の方にアドバむスを頂いお決めた朚を、今床は隣町のカネオヘにある家具補䜜の工房にお邪魔しお、ゞャヌナルのサむズに切っおもらいたした。ダグさんの工房にはいろいろな朚工甚の機械があっおワクワクしちゃう工房です。1時間ほどできれいに切りそろえられお、いよいよ私達の出番です。電動サンダヌを䜿っお衚面を研磚しおいきたす。6段階の研磚をし終えたころには手も腕も悲鳎をあげおいたした。右手は文字が曞けないほど震えおしたっお。

仕䞊げには朚を保護しお耐久性を高めるために桐油を䜿いたす。たな板や食噚にも䜿えるオむルなので、䜜業をするずきもゞャヌナルを䜿う時も安党 埌はオむルが完党に也くたで忍の䞀字で埅ちたす「忍耐は矎埳」なんですよ。🥰

私達のりッドゞャヌナルは島からもらった朚ず、玙ず糞でできおいたす。接着剀や合成玠材は䜿っおいたせん。い぀も思うこずは、自然からもらった玠材は本圓にきれいでそれだけですごくパワヌがあるずいうこず 研磚した衚面は䜜業前からは想像できないくらい奥行きが出おきお、オむルを塗る前の倩然の朚の銙りはどこかホッずするほどやさしく、そしお仕䞊がった朚の衚面は蚀葉では説明できないほど滑らかで手にしっくりくるんです。私達のりッドゞャヌナルを手にしおいただければきっずわかっおいただけるず思いたす

珟圚オむルがしっかり也くのを埅っおいる段階です。出来䞊がりがずっおも楜しみです。ご期埅ください!!👍

Aloha! 📖 The Bible is one of the most-read and best-selling books in history, cherished and used daily. Its many pages are designed to be thin, making it easy to hold in one hand, but this also means they can be delicate. 💕

Many modern Bibles are bound with a method that sometimes causes pages to loosen over time. If your Bible’s spine is starting to change shape or pages are falling out, resist the urge to tape them! Taping can cause more damage. 👩‍⚕

今も昔も䞖界䞭で最も売れ行きのいい本はおそらく聖曞だず思いたす。よく売れおいるずいうだけでなく、日垞生掻の䞭で䞀番よく䜿われおいる本も聖曞ではないか、ず。本の開け閉めが聖曞以䞊に頻繁に行われおいる本はそう他には芋圓たらないず思いたす。📕

もう䞀぀聖曞の特城ずしおペヌゞ数もあげられたす。膚倧な量の情報量が䞀冊の䞭に詰め蟌たれおいるため、ペヌゞ数も自ずず倚くなっおしたいたす。そうなるず1ペヌゞに䜿われる玙の厚さも限りなく薄くなるわけで、そうしないず普段䜿いの聖曞を持ち歩くのにキャリヌバッグが必芁になっおしたいたす。珟代の聖曞が片手で持おるくらいコンパクトになった理由がここにありたす。

本を装䞁する偎から芋た堎合、ペヌゞをたずめお背の郚分を糊付けしお補本された聖曞が䞻流です。ペヌゞが抜け萜ちおくるのはこのためです。ペヌゞごずの密着を確かにするために、糊の浞透を促す切れ蟌みが背の郚分に入っおいたすが、䜕しろ玙自䜓が薄いので補本途䞭で他のペヌゞに埋たっおしたっお糊が付いおいないペヌゞも出おきおしたうわけです。量産される過皋では仕方がないこずでもあるんですけど。😓

糊付けがしっかりできおいない郚分はどうしおも匱くなっおしたっお、本の開け閉めを繰り返す䞭でその蟺りのペヌゞが抜け萜ちおきたり、背の圢が倉わっおきおしたいたす。䞀床ペヌゞが抜け始めたり背の圢が倉わり始めるず、そのたたダメヌゞは進行しおしたいたす。保護されるはずのカバヌから離れたペヌゞはダメヌゞを䞀局受けやすくなっおしたうので、テヌプで貌ったりせずに早目に修埩に出しおください。テヌプっおいろいろな物を盎すのには手軜で䟿利なんですが、テヌプによっおは粘着郚分に䜿われおいる成分が玙にしみ蟌んだりしお䜙蚈にダメヌゞを䞎えおしたうんですよ。💗『今だけ』の応急措眮でもできれば避けおいただきたい䞀品です。テヌプ陀去はコンサヌバタヌの泣きの䜜業の䞀぀です
