Second thinning of this red pine plantation wrapped up last weekend!

This 15 acre stand definitely tested our Ponsse machines. Thick boxelder had taken over much of the understory, but throughout the harvest we pulled those invasive stems out by the roots whenever possible. Taking them completely out of the ground gives native tree species a much better opportunity to regenerate while making any future boxelder growth far more manageable for the private landowner.

The landowner also plans to have forestry mulching completed in the future, and with the work MML put into this stand, that next step will be much easier.

The before and after photos tell the story. This job tested my patience at times, but I’m extremely proud of the finished results. Looking forward to watching this stand continue to improve for years to come. 🌲

Trailers are one of the backbones of our business, but like many, we got into the habit of just hooking on and going without giving the fleet the attention it deserved. When you’re constantly on the move, maintenance can easily get pushed aside. That finally caught up with us when we had a bearing and hub failure on the flatbed while hauling the skid loader back to the shop one evening.

Bagley Trailer Sales has always been a great option for trailer sales and service, and now that Ethan has taken over, he’s helped get our entire fleet back on track. It’s a great feeling knowing every trailer is ready to hit the road when we need it.

We also added a new aluminum trailer from Bagley’s to haul our UTV. Whenever a private landowner calls about a potential timber harvest, we bring the UTV along so we can comfortably tour their property together, discuss their goals, and evaluate. In the heat of summer or the bitter cold of winter a property can be comfortably toured with a landowner now.

Keeping another town road safe in this summer heat! A load of material was purchased to build a smooth transition between the blacktop and our jobsite entrance, helping protect the edge of the road from damage during logging operations.

It’s the little details that make a big difference. We take pride in leaving every property and every road we use in better condition than when we arrived.

This second thinning red pine plantation is already coming together, and I can’t wait to share the transformation photos.

🌲Finished up another long time landowner’s red pine plantation this week.

Like many plantations, a few areas have begun to decline due to pocket decline and red root disease. Working closely with Ethan, our private forestry consultant, we created several overstory removal areas to help slow the spread of the disease while allowing the remaining trees to be monitored. The goal is to support the stand so one or two additional harvests can be completed in the future.

Throughout the job, MML took extra care to protect the natural regeneration already coming in, especially the white pine, oak, and maple seedlings. Protecting that next generation of trees is just as important as the harvest itself.

Every property is different, and every management decision is made with the future of the forest in mind. Looking forward to watching this stand continue to transition and thrive for years to come.

Flashback Friday to just a couple months ago when our new Ponsse Ergo Active Frame with the H8 harvesting head was delivered.

It’s been a strong summer so far, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to keep serving private landowners across central Wisconsin. Every day we head to the woods with the same goal. To provide quality forestry work, protect the future of the forest, and leave every property better than we found it.

We’re looking forward to the rest of the season and many more productive days ahead. 🌲💪

These are the kinds of before and after photos that are worth sharing.

We’re just getting started on a second thinning in a red pine stand in the Town of Sharon. Years of heavy boxelder and other invasive species have filled the understory. These shade tolerant species prevent quality native regeneration from taking hold.

As MML works through this stand, Michael takes the extra time in the harvester to pull invasive stems out by the roots whenever possible, helping prevent them from re-sprouting. It’s one more step that takes extra time but pays dividends for the future health of the forest.

It’s this attention to detail and commitment to doing the job right that we strive to provide every private landowner we work with.
