We picked up a few wrought iron patio sets that are heading into the shop for a full makeover — sandblasted down to bare metal and powder coated to last for years of summers to come.

It's the #1 question we get at the shop — and the answer might surprise you.
The Short Answer: 15–20 Years (or More!)
When done right, a quality powder coat finish can last 15 to 20 years under normal conditions — and we've seen jobs still looking great well past that mark. Compare that to traditional paint, which often starts chipping, fading, or peeling within just 2–5 years, and you can see why powder coating is the gold standard.
What Affects the Lifespan?
🌞 Sun Exposure (UV) — Outdoor pieces in constant sunlight may show fading on darker colors after 10+ years. We can use UV-stable powders for outdoor furniture, fences, and railings to push that even further.
🌧️ Weather & Climate — Indiana winters, road salt, humidity — powder coating handles it all far better than paint, but harsh environments will shorten any finish's life.
🔧 The Prep Work — This is HUGE. A powder coat is only as good as the surface beneath it. That's why we sandblast and clean every part thoroughly before coating. Skipping prep = early failure.
🌡️ Proper Cure — Powder that's under-baked or rushed won't crosslink properly and will fail early. We monitor time and temperature on every job.

🌙 What Really Happens Inside Our Curing Oven? 🔥
Ever wonder what makes powder coating so much tougher than regular paint? The secret isn't just the powder — it's the heat. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the most important step in the entire process.
Step 1: The Powder Goes On Cold
When we spray your part with our electrostatic gun, the powder is just that — dry powder clinging to the surface through an electrical charge. At this stage, you could literally wipe it off with your finger. It's not paint yet.
Step 2: Into the Oven She Goes
Your part rolls into our 8'L x 4.5'W x 6'H curing oven, where temperatures climb to around 375–400°F. This is where the real transformation begins.
Step 3: The Powder Melts and Flows
As the part heats up, those dry powder particles melt into a smooth, liquid coating that flows evenly across every surface — getting into corners, edges, and details that traditional paint can't reach the same way.
Step 4: Chemical Crosslinking (The Magic Part) ✨
Here's where powder coating earns its reputation. The heat triggers a chemical reaction called crosslinking — the melted powder molecules bond together AND bond to the metal itself, forming a single, continuous shell. It's not sitting on your part anymore. It's now part of your part.
Step 5: The Cool-Down
After the proper cure time (usually 15–20 minutes at temperature), your piece comes out and cools to a finish that's:
✔️ Up to 10x thicker than paint
✔️ Resistant to chipping, scratching, fading, and corrosion
✔️ UV stable for outdoor applications
✔️ Built to last years, not months
Why Heat Is the Key

Why We Don't Coat Over Rust or Old Paint
Every now and then someone asks if we can just powder coat right over what's already on a part — old paint, surface rust, whatever's there. We get it: skipping prep sounds like a way to save time and money. But here's the honest truth — coating over rust or old paint fails, and it usually fails fast.
Here's why:
🔬 Powder coating needs to bond to clean metal. It grabs onto the bare surface. If there's old paint or rust in the way, it's bonding to that instead — and that layer can let go, taking your new finish with it.
🦠 Rust doesn't stop. It spreads. Seal rust under a fresh coating and it keeps working underneath where you can't see it. Eventually it bubbles, flakes, and pushes the finish right off. You've just paid to hide a problem, not fix it.
🌡️ Old paint can't take the heat. Powder coating cures in our oven at high temperature. Old paint and coatings can bubble, gas out, and ruin the finish before it even sets.
That's why every job starts with proper prep. We sandblast parts down to clean, bare metal so the powder has a solid surface to grab. It's the difference between a finish that looks good for a few months and one that lasts for years.
We won't cut that corner — because a coating that fails isn't a deal, it's a do-over. When we finish a job, we want it to last.

Local shops, local craftsmanship. 🤝
We're proud to share this one — a custom metal sign for 765 Collision Repair, "Kokomo's Hometown Body Shop."
This was a true team effort between local businesses. Mud Creek Metal Works designed and cut the sign, then it came to us for powder coating. That bold red, white, and blue really pops — and powder coating means those colors are going to stay sharp and vibrant for years, indoors or out.
There's nothing quite like seeing local shops work together to build something that lasts. The sign is now proudly on display at 765 Collision Repair — go check it out in person if you're in Kokomo!

Today isn't about us. It's about the men and women who gave all — who never came home so that we could. We didn't earn our freedom; it was bought and paid for by those who laid down their lives for it.

The real fuel behind the finish. 🍫😂
People ask what powers all that attention to detail around here... and folks, the secret is out. This is the shop snack fridge.
Snickers by the 48-count case. Kit Kats. Crunch bars. Reese's. M&Ms. And a few waters in there too — gotta stay hydrated, right? (Mostly there for show.)
There's just something about a frozen candy bar between coats that hits different. Cold Snickers on a hot shop day? Undefeated.
